[00:02:08] lupine: the idea of a user being different to a friend is an interesting one
[00:02:30] rhizome: has_secure_password
[00:02:33] lupine: it means a friendship isn't necessarily mutual
[00:02:56] lupine: (you can write it so it is, of course, but then the naming is inconsistent)
[00:03:29] lupine: (also, sql is bad at graphs, but for a toy project it doesn't really matter)
[00:03:59] ellisTAA: oh yeah users not user. password_hash yes ty. well so in the schema i was trying to see a friends instance consists of two users ??? is there a better way to do it than the way i did?
[00:04:54] lupine: if friendships are always mutual, then I would probably have a friendships table with friend1_id and friend2_id or something similar
[00:04:55] ellisTAA: say* not see
[00:05:10] lupine: if they're not, it's actually a lot neater
[00:05:10] ellisTAA: ok that makes sense
[00:05:17] commondream: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:05:51] lupine: your current schema allows you to say that people can make friendship claims on others, but a mutual friendship is only formed when there are two entries in your database, with transposed user_id and friend_id
[00:06:21] lupine: which is one way to model "your friendship request has not yet been accepted"
[00:06:59] lupine: (in a graph database, edges can have directions, of course)
[00:07:05] ellisTAA: http://postimg.org/image/ps6kri9br/d298bfca/ that better?
[00:07:26] ellisTAA: you???re using big words
[00:07:46] lupine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graph_database
[00:07:52] rhizome: you can also have a flag that turns a following into a bidirectional friendship
[00:07:53] lupine: graph theory isn't too bad
[00:08:28] ellisTAA: O.O ill look into it
[00:08:50] lupine: see, I suggested friend1 and friend2, but I don't actually like this kind of thing too much. it's one way to do it but if pushed, I'd probably go for the user vs. friend split
[00:09:16] ellisTAA: so in my migration i could just write a user has many friendships? a friendship has_many users?
[00:09:20] rhizome: huh, i was under the impression that neo4j was pay-only
[00:09:23] lupine: ACTION has a similar physical thing to model - cables - which are fun
[00:09:30] lupine: a cable has two sides
[00:09:52] lupine: just as a friendship has two users
[00:09:56] lupine: grump grump
[00:10:07] lupine: rhizome, no, it's pretty good and free afaik
[00:10:37] lupine: probably huge overkill though
[00:10:53] lupine: but in a lot of ways, graph theory is easier than relational algebra
[00:11:20] lupine: different use cases, of course, there's a lot that can't go into graph databases

[02:19:48] gambl0re: Ember was formed in 2011 by Yehuda Katz, a core contributor to the popular jQuery and Ruby on Rails projects. --- Nothing in common?

[02:21:18] tyrone: has joined #RubyOnRails
[02:21:26] ArrogantPrick: they have little in common. Ember is written and used entirely in JavaScript, whereas Rails is primarily Ruby, but can load .js files. The frameworks in question are extremely different in usage and implementation. The primary similarities are that they're both MVC frameworks
[02:22:01] ArrogantPrick: If you understand an MVC framework, however, it's likely that you can figure out any other.
[02:22:41] ArrogantPrick: kinda like if you know an OOP, it will be easier for you to understand just about any other OOP

[02:43:46] gerep: aloneintheworld, that's the relation you have, x has_many y, y has_many z and so on, so you have to dig for the data
[02:44:32] aloneintheworld: but I think that will make Rails to query per each exam per school??? generating as many SELECT statements as schools you have in the Town
[02:46:13] gerep: aloneintheworld, Let's say you have a town id of 1, so you'll town = Town.find(1), you have just one SELECT, now you'll get all school: town.schools will generate something like: SELECT * FROM SCHOOLS WHERE TOWN_ID = 1
[02:46:28] gerep: aloneintheworld, I don't see a problem there
[02:47:10] aloneintheworld: the problem is when I want to query for all the exams in that town.. iterating over each school wont generate many statements like select exam where school_id = XXXX ?
[02:47:39] gerep: But the exams are related with School, not town
[02:47:55] gerep: You'll have to query all of them
[02:48:00] gerep: But there is no way out of that
[02:48:28] gerep: I suggest you use a SQL instead of activerecord if you think it is a heavy database request
[02:48:55] gerep: I had a problem with ActiveRecord one because of a really complex and long request, making it a SQL command solved my problem in a few seconds
[02:49:13] aloneintheworld: there???s no way to tell Rails to ???Select all exams, join school, where school.town = XXXX??? ?

[02:53:03] aloneintheworld: maybe Town has_many exams, through schools helps ?
[02:53:33] gerep: This way Schools will become a many-to-many table
[02:53:53] gerep: Which will not make any sense if you are willing to save school data there
[02:54:01] gerep: You'll have lots of duplicated data
[02:54:45] gerep: you school table will store some data about the school, like name, address, etc right?
[02:55:30] gerep: So your School table would look something like: town_id, exam_id, name, address
[02:55:39] gerep: So for each new exam for that town
[02:55:58] gerep: You'd have to duplicate all the school information (name, address, etc) in a new record
[02:56:16] aloneintheworld: I dont have an exam_id on School
[02:56:22] aloneintheworld: I have school_id on Exams
[02:57:25] gerep: In a has many through relation, the two tables must have the id
[02:57:45] gerep: So since school will be the table between them, you'll have to add the school_id and exam_id
[02:58:03] gerep: aloneintheworld, http://guides.rubyonrails.org/association_basics.html#the-has-many-through-association point 2.4

[03:02:58] ght: by "the code" I'm of course referring to the remaining code in the controller action.

[04:26:54] fny: Right now I've got this but the AR models look like new records since their instantiated with `.new`: result.values.map{ |value_set|

[04:47:15] fny: It's always been its own separate gem
[04:48:20] sleungcy: so asset pipeline is a different thing?
[04:48:38] fny: Yeah, the asset pipeline uses sprockets
[04:48:42] sleungcy: and they switched to sprocket?
[04:49:53] fny: So the asset pipeline was introduced in Rails 3
[04:50:10] fny: The asset pipeline depends on sprockets, which is a separate gem
[04:50:28] fny: In rails 4, the asset pipeline was extracted into a gem called sprockets-rails
[04:50:50] sleungcy: ah! asset pipeline is like wrapper around sprocket then?

[14:22:59] borodin: gonna wrap the app in an rpm and deploy using puppet

[14:25:41] pontiki: that doesn't make it an invalid choice by any means
[14:26:22] quazimodo: so i'm guessing you build your rpm via some rake/make task, upload it and let the system put things where they need to go
[14:26:42] pontiki: well, puppet is the thing that puts things in place
[14:26:48] pontiki: but essentially, yes
[14:27:02] borodin: build the rpm on jenkins using fpm (too lazy to build an rpm using rpmbuild lol)

[14:27:38] pontiki: they are not even close to the same thing at all

[19:03:36] Cache_Money: atmosx: No, an actual template for a proposal document. e.g. how much it will cost to do the job
[19:03:55] drale2k_: atmosx: think of it just as migrations but for rake tasks. Rails tells you when you have a new migration to run
[19:04:15] drale2k_: i'd like that for rake tasks too
[19:04:15] otherj: is there some way to have multiple collection_check_boxes in a view that use the same "method" (second argument) but operate independently in the html?
[19:04:21] atmosx: drale2k_: I can only think of such a thing through Guard.
[19:04:30] platosha_: has joined #RubyOnRails
[19:04:58] atmosx: drale2k_: you want this to be 'called' when the user pull's the new branch right? without them having to issue any kind of cmd
[19:06:15] drale2k_: i want it to tell a person to run a important task (or multiple tasks) if he has not done yet. Can be automatic but could also be per some command "run_pending_tasks" or something
[19:06:29] drale2k_: question is how to keep track of what to run. Migrations do it via version number
[19:06:42] drale2k_: i just hoped there is something already
[19:06:55] drale2k_: i wonder how people on big teams tell each other to run some task
[19:08:05] otherj: probably slack or in the issue
[19:08:52] drale2k_: imagine what a pain it would be to tell people to run migrations like that
[19:09:19] otherj: i mean, it probably only matters until it gets merged anyway
