[00:02:07] rails715: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:02:26] fizzbuzzanator: hello. is anyone here well-versed with the puma server?
[00:03:05] foobar121: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:04:38] GnuYawk: i have an activerecord_relation that contains Users. How do i make a new activerecord_relation that is made up of all those users Topics?
[00:04:44] GnuYawk: a User has_many Topics
[00:04:47] rhizome: mices: could probably do that with procmail
[00:04:54] GnuYawk: is there a method to do that or do i have to do it manually with a loop
[00:05:11] rhizome: fizzbuzzanator found #puma
[00:05:32] andrewcarroll: hi i am fizzbuzzanator
[00:05:40] andrewcarroll: just logged into my actual nick
[00:05:51] andrewcarroll: thanks, will check it out
[00:05:55] rhizome: GnuYawk: User.includes(:topic).where(...)
[00:06:12] pshoukry: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:06:59] GnuYawk: rhizome: close, but i dont want there to be any users at all in the array
[00:07:04] Denarii: GnuYawk: you want all Topics that are associated with a user?
[00:07:12] GnuYawk: Denarii: yeah, just the topics
[00:07:20] Denarii: Topic.joins(:user)
[00:07:53] Denarii: It will do an inner join which will ensure you only get topics that are associated with a user.
[00:08:03] GnuYawk: well its multiple users, not just one
[00:09:05] GnuYawk: I have a query like this: users = User.where("name LIKE ?", "%#{search_query}%")
[00:09:19] GnuYawk: trying to get a new record that contains the topics of all the users in "users"
[00:09:23] fgo: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:10:32] Denarii: Then you could do Topic.where(user_id: users.map(&:id)) or, if you don't need anything out of that user relation except the ids, Topic.where(user_id: users.pluck(:id))
[00:10:56] GnuYawk: awesome! I love that second solution
[00:11:00] GnuYawk: thanks bro

[00:54:33] hoffmanc: do folks use docker instead of rbenv / rvm nowadays? From what I've read so far, it seems to be the ultimate solution for portability
[00:55:41] rhizome: i recommend rvm/rbenv/chruby unless you really need a VM
[00:55:45] rhizome: such as windows devs
[00:56:40] rickmasta: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:56:42] hoffmanc: but afaik docker isn't a vm environment
[00:56:57] michaeldeol: has joined #RubyOnRails

[00:59:37] rhizome: huh, look at that. sounds like docker is like portable jail/chroots
[01:00:37] rhizome: long story short, i don't think i've ever heard of people using docker for development. maybe in deployment, but that's down the line

[01:07:38] pwnd_nsfw: I'm considering putting Linux on my laptop. Does anyone have experience with Skype, at the least, on Linux?
[01:08:02] rhizome: dunno. i ordered my laptop without a cam
[01:08:29] pwnd_nsfw: Putting Linux would be a waste of hardware for this machine, but... I don't really do anything else on it
[01:08:35] pwnd_nsfw: Would be a good way to get familiar with linux

[01:09:36] strcmp1: some linux users like to sandbox cuz they dont trust it but it def works fine
[01:10:05] pwnd_nsfw: And I guess I should shell out the $10 for Synergy
[01:10:11] HAL2328: what's linux distro you guys like for development?

[01:18:05] pwnd_nsfw: Linux isn't know much for it's gaming capabilities
[01:18:19] pwnd_nsfw: And not being able to have proprietary gfx drivers
[01:18:48] jher: Ugh, people always say that. But if enough people switch to Linux, then it won't be a problem anymore
[01:19:00] rhizome: both nvidia and ati supply native drivers, and steam is available on linux.
[01:19:06] pwnd_nsfw: You're right, but when do you think a brainwashed market will switch? :P
[01:19:17] Scripore: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:19:33] Mendenhall: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:19:36] pwnd_nsfw: Oh yeah? Then linux has come some way since I last used it. I knew steam was getting games over to linux
[01:19:43] jher: I don't know. Windows would have to be terrible enough to-- oh wait
[01:19:50] pwnd_nsfw: Haha, right?
[01:19:57] pwnd_nsfw: I honestly have no issues with Windows
[01:20:05] pwnd_nsfw: Except when I want to build libxml for a gem
[01:20:38] pwnd_nsfw: I should have wrote down what I did to remedy that, but it is a process everytime a gem requires it
[01:20:49] jher: Windows is unneccessary suffering for a developer
[01:21:00] HAL2328: Radar, Any thoughts on Debian? I am definitely considering Ubuntu since I'm on a windows machine having hard time getting things to work
[01:21:15] Radar: HAL2328: Debian and Ubuntu are both fine.
[01:21:22] w0rd-driven: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:21:32] jher: HAL2328: I'd say Ubuntu has better support for getting started with things
[01:21:36] Radar: I have no strong opinions either way since I use Mac for my development. I've just used Ubuntu in the past (2008ish) and I liked it.
[01:21:44] Radar: Ubuntu is definitely more user-friendly.
[01:22:03] jher: Radar: same, I've used both and really like Ubuntu even though most of my time is spent in the terminal
[01:22:10] gambl0re: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:22:44] HAL2328: Ah I see. I will install ubuntu first. I just heard its a little bloated

[01:23:51] DoctorMonocular: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:23:54] HAL2328: I'm familiar with terminal but that's about it. I had a mac and i miss iterm badly. command line on windows is quite limiting
[01:24:09] jher: Yeah, I mean Ubuntu is user friendly, whereas Debian kindof assumes that you know general linux things
[01:24:30] jher: I think you'll enjoy Ubuntu better

[01:25:57] HAL2328: thanks for the directions, i will try ubuntu first. it took me 2 days to find a working combination of rails version + ruby installer and i don't think i'll be able to test new versions unless i use mac/linux
[01:26:34] jher: It saddens me when people use Windows of their own accord.
[01:26:41] HAL2328: is it safe to just use the latest stable version of ubuntu?
[01:26:51] x-light: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:27:44] HAL2328: lol yes. i have to admit its been a big PITA.. i can't even copy and paste my error messages to google from the cmd. the selector draws a rectangle rather than wrapping the text i'm highlighting
[01:27:53] w0rd-driven: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:28:19] jher: You'll have to upgrade later if you don't use an LTS version, but it's not a big deal.
[01:28:37] jher: Well you don't *have* to, it's just recommended
[01:29:57] jher: But if you won't mind upgrading to a newer version (takes maybe an hour depending on your internet connection) in a year or so, I'd suggest the latest

[01:43:19] VeryBewitching: HAL2328: I think I would probably go with ~20Gb to be safe.
[01:43:30] VeryBewitching: HAL2328: Ubuntu requires at least 5Gb
[01:43:40] VeryBewitching: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

Apache is configured with SSL and a http->https redirect. There's no SSL between apache <-> nginx <-> unicorn (it's not necessary). Everything works, but many links in the rails app are http and this causes messages like "sending data over unsecure connection" in

[22:26:50] smathy: mices, make a file ~/.gemrc with "---\ngem: --no-rdoc" in it (add --no-ri if you don't care about that either)
