[00:01:15] doctorly: Radar: I'm actually not sure, because the code involves several partials, controller, and model. I was guessing model, but wanted to make sure. I will post the code in a moment.
[00:01:23] Radar: doctorly: thank you.
[00:01:36] Radar: doctorly: Start by posting something and then if we want anything more we'll ask you to update the gist.
[00:01:43] shathoma: So then what do I do if my controllers get to fat? But i don't need a new model? Or does that mean I did approach it wrong and probably do need a new model?
[00:01:48] smathy: doctorly, just to demonstrate how impossible this problem is to diagnose without code, here's the answer to the question you asked... A virtual attribute won't be saved to the DB, that's what a virtual attribute means.
[00:01:58] Radar: shathoma: worry about it when you get to that :)
[00:02:19] shathoma: Thanks again guys.
[00:02:26] smathy: shathoma, use the rails generators if you want an opinion about how to structure things.
[00:02:31] shathoma: The aha moment took a stupid question asked by me but hey it came.

[00:04:31] lacrymology: smathy: thanks for the pointers, just what I needed
[00:04:46] smathy: lacrymology, you're welcome.
[00:05:24] lacrymology: smathy: one thing, the Customer I put there myself. How am I supposed to create the group that requires a customer, if it cannot go in the params. Change it to customer_id?
[00:05:30] chridal: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:06:27] smathy: lacrymology, params come from the request, they can't contain objects like that only strings and hashes/arrays of strings.
[00:07:22] lacrymology: smathy: that's fine, got it. So, DeviceGroup.create(params, customer: my_customer)?

[00:11:47] smathy: lacrymology, oh, so probably something more like: my_customer.device_groups.create(params)

[00:16:07] smathy: doctorly, so actually, my initial response is accurate. Virtual attributes don't get saved to the DB.
[00:17:22] Radar: EllisTAA: restart your server.
[00:18:47] Radar: doctorly: self.start_date = Date.strptime("#{@start_year}/#{@start_month}/1", "%Y/%m/%d") is a shorter way to write your code.
[00:20:17] doctorly: Radar: That makes sense, I should be using strptime.

[00:20:34] j3r0: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:20:55] doctorly: smathy: that fixed everything, thanks a lot. So does trying to access start_date prevent me from saving to the db?
[00:21:17] smathy: doctorly, "trying to access start_date" ?
[00:21:34] Radar: doctorly: attr_accessor overrides AR's own setter and getter for start_date.
[00:21:38] smathy: doctorly, is that code for "calling attr_accessor :start_date" ?
[00:21:48] wasatchwizard: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:21:51] Radar: doctorly: So when you call self.start_date = <date>, you're calling attr_accessor's setter, and not AR's.
[00:22:53] wasatchwizard: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:23:39] doctorly: Radar: I see, that makes a lot of sense. I will read the docs on attr_accessor more. I obviously need to learn how it works.

[00:27:10] ModusPwnens: Our team is implementing the presenter pattern in our rails website. Does it matter if you construct your presenter in your controller vs in your view?
[00:28:21] doctorly: Radar: smathy: thank you!

[00:28:44] smathy: ModusPwnens, doesn't matter to me ;)
[00:29:42] acti0nman: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:30:18] ModusPwnens: There's no pitfalls of doing it one way vs the other? I didn't think that there was, but I wanted to ask people smarter than me :)
[00:32:37] smathy: ModusPwnens, both have pros and cons, I wouldn't describe either as flawless, put it in the controller and you've got this gunk in all your controllers, lots more code, business logic in controllers, etc., put them in your view and you probably have more repetition, more chance of missing wrapping something, but much better/simpler control over things like objects within collections.
[00:33:43] smathy: ...many of those compromises are why we ended up going with trailblazer operations/cells rather than presenters.
[00:33:54] Trynemjoel: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:34:08] smathy: ...we just found that we really wanted another layer between our controllers and our views.
[00:34:40] Radar: doctorly: thanks for showing your code :)
[00:35:14] kitsuneyo: can i include data being submitted in a rails form in a js data: confirm warning? do i grab it from params or something like that?

[07:53:39] kiki_lamb: Specifically, what I'm running into is that things are mostly working, and embedding single line expressions in the <%= tags works fine. But, when I try to do multiline expressions, like, say, anything taking a lengthy block, Erubis seems to be trying to eval/execute that line of code in isolation, resulting in a syntax error.
