[03:01:58] rhizome: are you doing math with words?
[03:02:11] hnanon: <%= Date::MONTHNAMES[@product.month] %> <%= @product.year %>
[03:02:18] hnanon: month and year are both integers.
[03:02:56] hnanon: MONTHNAMES is a rails constant that takes the month number and converts it to a month name.

[03:24:01] elemeken: FailBit, so i can use rsync to sync data across many servers from a production server?
[03:24:06] elemeken: is that your suggestion?
[03:24:29] FailBit: is there a problem with that?
[03:24:39] elemeken: don't know, i am honestly looking for approaches
[03:24:48] FailBit: well don't use git
[03:24:57] elemeken: yeah, that seems worst approach
[03:25:06] elemeken: because a) dont push from production
[03:25:34] elemeken: but im curious, rails precompile throws me off, so im not sure if i should be compiling everything to a cdn
[03:25:44] elemeken: and then pulling from that for local development provisions
[03:25:49] smoitra: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:25:50] elemeken: capistrano, puppet, etc etc
[03:26:08] FailBit: precompiling is essentially only for production (or staging if you have it)
[03:26:30] elemeken: so lets say i have an application in production, and it has images uploaded in an engine
[03:26:43] elemeken: it makes a folder in public/x/01..n
[03:26:56] FailBit: oh you mean static assets in **/assets
[03:26:57] elemeken: is that already the incorrect approach
[03:27:07] elemeken: well its outside assets i noticed
[03:27:23] elemeken: so it actually was being pushed to git because of a shitty .gitignore
[03:27:39] tuelz1: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:27:41] elemeken: but now i actually want to host all of that correctly, and think about speeding up delivery
[03:28:05] FailBit: is your site hosted using a CDN of some sort?
[03:28:07] rhizome: i don't get it
[03:28:12] elemeken: site is vpn
[03:28:20] elemeken: but i do upload files to aws
[03:28:29] elemeken: like reports and things, using their sdk
[03:28:47] FailBit: that's not what I'm asking
[03:28:59] elemeken: assets are served locally from the webserver
[03:29:08] FailBit: yeah okay that's a problem
[03:29:10] elemeken: app is provided through uwsgi
[03:29:21] elemeken: ok thanks, good a clear problem! :)
[03:29:35] FailBit: you should at least have a CDN backing your assets
[03:29:56] elemeken: ok cool, thanks i hadn't bit the bullet yet
[03:30:02] elemeken: any suggestions?
[03:30:12] FailBit: S3 works if that is where you put all your assets but it can get pricey
[03:30:19] FailBit: I recommend cloudflare
[03:30:42] FailBit: if you have a working VPS and stuff, cloudflare will take a lot of strain off your site
[03:30:55] FailBit: moreso than varnishing everything
[03:31:10] elemeken: proper cacheing and routing that i will never ever get with a vps/adhoc-vps-cloud
[03:31:24] elemeken: thats what im after i guess with a cdn?
[03:32:07] elemeken: cool, any gems that are commonly associated with this process that roll off the tongue?
[03:32:11] xnp70: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:32:12] elemeken: ill start googling here
[03:32:29] FailBit: no, you need to do system config
[03:32:46] elemeken: ah, i remember a value in the initializers maybe
[03:32:49] pawnbox: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:32:56] FailBit: mainly, if you're using nginx, you need to set Cache-Control on your assets
[03:33:19] FailBit: if you're not you need to figure that out on your own
[03:33:40] elemeken: should i be pointing nginx to the application's public folder, or is a symlink the more common choice
[03:34:00] FailBit: yeah, root nginx to myapp/public
[03:34:25] elemeken: honestly, i'm all bassckwards in the assets portion of rails, so i appreciate the information
[03:34:39] elemeken: bassackwards?
[03:35:04] FailBit: fuck shit stack on top of itself
[03:35:50] elemeken: one day everything will work right? one day.
[03:36:34] FailBit: ACTION points to docker
[03:36:47] elemeken: ayyyee i gave it a whirl with discourse
[03:36:51] elemeken: almost used it in production
[03:36:55] elemeken: leaning towards puppet atm
[03:37:03] FailBit: that's what I use
[03:37:09] FailBit: it's good enough
[03:37:09] elemeken: docker or puppet
[03:37:27] elemeken: yeah, via puppet apply?
[03:37:40] elemeken: it does work
[03:37:59] elemeken: a lot going on there when you get hiera involved
[03:38:10] hnanon: It looks like my month is being saved as a string. However, it's defined as an integer in my schema. Weird.
[03:38:12] elemeken: but you only have to write things once... every 2 months
[03:38:36] elemeken: FailBit, you tried coreos in production at all?
[03:38:47] FailBit: only used debian yet
[03:39:05] elemeken: you using puppet files in vagrant too?
[03:39:33] FailBit: should but don't
[03:39:36] shibabu: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:39:36] elemeken: it works, and is nice for development :)
[03:39:48] elemeken: i was curious about capistrano and puppet, if there is even a use case
[03:40:25] FailBit: for my project cap was set up outside of puppet
[03:40:29] sandstrom: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:40:58] elemeken: but still did environment configuration on the same machine provisioned by puppet?
[03:41:48] elemeken: ah neat, these are questions i never thought i'd have answers to. thanks
[03:42:22] elemeken: so wait.. should i still use rsync?
[03:42:25] apneic: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:42:34] elemeken: lol, so after a cdn, do a backup with rsync... ok got it
[03:42:38] elemeken: or whatever ill look it up
[03:42:44] FailBit: schedule a cronjob to sync it between your servers
[03:43:18] elemeken: would you do the same if you wanted to backup say /var/cache/git/*
[03:43:28] elemeken: just rsync it
[03:43:43] FailBit: yeah, pretty much anything except a database
[03:43:57] elemeken: nioce, yeah all of that i tackled first of course
[03:44:09] FailBit: in which case I would set up a weekly backup/rollover script and rsync the dumps daily
[03:44:10] elemeken: thats a total crash and burn there
[03:44:29] elemeken: yeah i scp a dump file or aws whatever
[03:44:54] elemeken: but the setup is far from ideal
[03:44:59] _Tariq: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:45:22] elemeken: oh, i have a rake task
[03:45:26] elemeken: that what i do, cron a rake task
[03:45:57] FailBit: you could, but be careful to set your environment or it will just die
[03:46:12] FailBit: RAILS_ENV=production rake some:thing
[03:46:34] elemeken: i use it. bad or good... i know its not common
[03:46:40] FailBit: I don't know what the hell it is

[03:47:54] FailBit: I would go for something a bit more battle tested
[03:48:11] FailBit: is your server memory constrained?
[03:48:28] elemeken: i upped it for rails i think 4GB or something
[03:48:40] elemeken: because i know things are tuned well
[03:48:46] FailBit: that's tiny
[03:49:08] elemeken: traffic is small though
[03:49:11] elemeken: like 500 uniques a day
[03:49:29] jeanre: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:49:46] FailBit: then whatever, you could keep using uwsgi but most people are using puma, unicorn, or passenger
[03:50:01] elemeken: i thought about unicorn, i might as well move to it now
[03:50:05] FailBit: does cap handle deploys with uwsgi well?
[03:50:20] elemeken: it should, but i havent built anything to do it yeat
[03:50:30] elemeken: i havent goofed with capistrano at all
[03:50:59] FailBit: I'll leave you to experiment with that then

[05:13:55] kenttt: Radar: good question, I don't know. I guess I'm just getting the feeling that "I'm doing it wrong" by throwing untested credentials in production.
[05:14:33] Radar: kenttt: Normally you'd do something on production to test them. Like if you were using Carrierwave + S3 you'd upload a file through that to test that the credentials are valid.
[05:14:48] hypermist: wait one second it might be my own derp i'll quickly try something

And I have a partial _header.html.erb inside the shared/ dir. Now when render partial site from header partial, I have to give like `<%= render partial: 'shared/header_menu/site' %>`, and it works. but `<%= render partial: 'header_menu/site' %>` doesn't find the view only.
[07:55:27] arup_r: Any trick the later part to workable, or `<%= render partial: 'shared/header_menu/site' %>` is the only way to go ?

[08:01:48] arup_r: yeah, I was wrong.. I re read it now.. I was talking about the root key... :( sorry to make you confused sasanka123
[08:01:48] Radar: sasanka123: No.

[08:02:50] sasanka123: i am coming from a Java experience, never did that when I was there
[08:03:08] sasanka123: @arup No worries, we're all learning:)
[08:03:15] _3by8: Here's another question: I have an order form with individual order items that the user may specify the quantity of--an order has many order items. If a user enters information relating to the order itself, that information remains there because Rails is awesome, however, since the order items are not a part of the order model, if a user were to change the quantity of an order item then THAT information is lost. Can I keep that in

I think what I want, if possible, is to use text_field but I'm not sure... posting Gist now.
[08:21:00] Radar: smells like you might want to use fields_for instead.

[11:21:13] arup_r: so, I am modeling some usecase. 1. A site can be assigned to many groups. 2. A user cam be assigned to groups via a site .. both looks like N:N relationship. As I am using, Postgresql, I am also thinking it like to have Group with site_id, site_ids (Array column), user_ids (Array column), name (String) .. it will work, but does it feel bad choice over has_many though soultion ?
[11:22:36] arup_r: please let me know if my question is not clear, so that I can try to make it clear
[11:24:15] arup_r: so when I will create site group, the record will be like group(name_value, site_ids: [someids]).. when it is a user group group(name_value, user_ids: [someids], site_id: site_id_value)
[11:28:11] tbuehlmann: arup_r, what's your reason for choosing an array of ids over using tables in your database?
[11:30:20] arup_r: because I am not really storing any value except name .. other fields except name columns are just for associations.. so with has many through, there will be many records which holds just ids of the 2 parties involved
[11:30:59] arup_r: and no more queries when I do group.users
[11:31:06] arup_r: I mean onle a SQL In is enough
[11:31:11] arup_r: no in between join
[11:32:34] arup_r: The only thing, is when I want to know a site belongs to what groups and a user belongs to what groups.. but as Array datatype supports indexing. I think it will not that much painful
[11:32:50] tbuehlmann: arup_r, what about integrity? do you check those arrays whether the ids are valid?
[11:33:03] arup_r: except the above ^^ all the other queries are pretty straight forward
[11:33:24] chridal: What would be some good arguments regarding using GUID over incremental ID or vice-versa? We're deploying a social network this week and I need to pick one
[11:33:47] tuelz1: has joined #RubyOnRails
[11:33:58] arup_r: tbuehlmann: that check I can perform in controllers.. before insert
[11:34:18] arup_r: if someone edit, the webpage and send me some out system ids, yes any body can
[11:34:56] tbuehlmann: arup_r, what I want to say: you have to be aware of these integrity things, don't let rails do this
[11:35:42] arup_r: one way is User.find(array_of_ids) .. and it will throw errors if any of them missing in DB.. This is just my thought.. I am not sure what is best,, that is why I asked here
[11:35:51] arup_r: tbuehlmann: you are correct
[11:37:01] arup_r: with has_many though also that is possible... because I have multi select dropdowns.. so any body can edit the dropdown and send me some invalid ids... and in that case rails will trigger error .. i don't need handle this .. as far as i know
[11:37:50] tbuehlmann: arup_r, I think it's a bad idea unless you have very good reasons
[11:37:58] arup_r: my point is does my one time creation check for integrity thing, wins over the extra storage DB will take for other has_many way
[11:41:30] tbuehlmann: you're entering a world of pain with that, I believe. why don't you just use the database? it's good with relations and foreign key stuff, that's its job

[14:20:34] _3by8: sevenseacat: hello! Sorry to bother you but I'm trying to go to sleep ASAP. I've got an order I'm trying to update in my database and not all of the attributes are being pulled in from the form, i.e. I have to recalculate the subtotal and tax, however, when I call update_attributes the recalculations aren't being saved. It's like this: @order.subtotal = results_of_calculation and @order.tax = same_thing then I call @order.update_a
[14:20:47] sevenseacat: _3by8: !debug
[14:20:47] helpa: _3by8: You have not provided enough information to debug your problem. Please provide this information: https://gist.github.com/radar/5384431
[14:20:54] helpa: Show rather than tell. Explaining your problem with code, stacktraces or errors is always preferred to explaining it with just text. Show us what's happening, rather than telling us. Put the code on https://gist.github.com and then give us the HTTP link to the Gist.
[14:21:39] _3by8: sevenseacat: not sure how to debug this one. I spat out the calculation in a flash and it popped up correctly. Let me get a short Gist here...
[14:25:17] _3by8: sevenseacat: I have a feeling that lines 10/11 are being overwritten by order_params but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do... https://gist.github.com/anonymous/c7788ec07d9276b3aa74
[14:25:56] sevenseacat: _3by8: thats exactly correct.
[14:26:15] sevenseacat: why not remove those params from your strong params so they dont get passed to your model?
[14:29:52] _3by8: sevenseacat: right, I tried that and what happens is that when I hit update, the subtotal and tax from the previous modifications are saved rather than the latest ones.
[14:30:04] sevenseacat: what previous modifications?
[14:30:20] sevenseacat: you're setting them on lines 10/11?
[14:33:12] _Tariq: has joined #RubyOnRails
[14:34:37] _3by8: sevenseacat: it seems like what's happening is that when I set the instance variable, it's pulling the values from the previous update. Let's say that my total for 3 items was 99.00 when I placed the order and then I change my mind and modify the order down to 2 items instead then the order updates to 99.00. If I modify the order again to, let's say 5, the price changes to 66.00 (or the price of 2)
[14:35:00] sadaf2605: has joined #RubyOnRails
[14:35:28] sevenseacat: right, because you're calculating the price etc. from the items in the order, then updating it with whatever was submitted

I have a `app/services` directory, and it also has more classes and modules under the `app/services/backend` directory. I have this line in the `config/application.rb`: `config.autoload_paths = %W{#{config.root}/app/services`), but my controller cannot find the constants (modules, and classes) defined in files under that directory.
[17:08:25] pzula: Any thoughts on why my controller is having issues? My specs were able to find the modules and classes fine, so I'm a bit confused.
