[00:48:17] baweaver: How many of you do migration testing?
[00:53:00] codepete: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:53:29] baweaver: just figured out that they exist after a migration with a subtle bug.
[00:53:44] baweaver: was curious to see if there's a trend towards it
[00:54:00] sarink: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:54:29] pwnd_nsfw: baweaver, can you think of any reason to test migrations?
[00:54:53] baweaver: restructuring a database, migrating data from one format to another
[00:55:07] baweaver: if you're going to be making a non-reversable migration it makes sense to ,e
[00:55:29] baweaver: basically, migrations that could get you fired if they go bad
[00:55:39] baweaver: adding a column / index / renaming? Maybe not as much.
[00:55:58] baweaver: but yeah, this would have saved me a few headaches today.
[00:56:54] baweaver: I'll do a bit of a writeup on it later.
[00:57:58] smathy: baweaver, oh wait, when you said "test" I took you to mean writing a repeatable test to check the migration.
[00:58:28] baweaver: actually exactly that, though they lose the repeat value quickly
[00:58:40] baweaver: well, unless you need to rebuild it for some reason
[00:59:04] baweaver: Didn't know about them until today so still forming an opinion
[00:59:25] baweaver: though the opinion I have currently is all major (read: breaking) changes should have a repeatable test on them of some sort
[00:59:42] baweaver: partially in case someone decides to change one for some reason.
[00:59:43] jsvgoncalves: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:59:50] smathy: baweaver, right, so for your situation I would test the migration, just that I wouldn't have it in a repeatable script test, it'd just be some instructions that I'd perform first on whatever sanitized (or not) dev DB we get from prod, then in staging, and finally in a transaction in production before COMMITting.
[00:59:54] baweaver: (they should be immutable)
[01:00:10] smathy: baweaver, I don't do data transformations in migrations, so that I can check them before committing.
[01:00:25] baweaver: In this case, the entire structure of the applications core changed
[01:00:33] baweaver: additive, granted, but still very large
[01:00:40] smathy: baweaver, I would also not remove the old column/data in the same deploy/process, sometimes it's weeks later.
[01:00:50] hcnewsom: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:01:01] baweaver: because someone didn't think through the DB design originally or didn't anticipate future requirements very well
[01:01:11] baweaver: smathy: agreed, hence additive changes only
[01:01:23] baweaver: which just saved my tail considering I rolled it back.
[01:01:49] smathy: If I'm doing a very large change where a lot of things are changing then I'd take a full copy of the main DB, and actually transition to a new DB leaving the old one intact and online to make rollback easier.
[01:02:16] baweaver: snapshot for me
[01:02:22] smathy: Cool, even easier :)
[01:02:37] baweaver: I had every paranoid rollback I could think of in there.
[01:02:37] mwlang: in routes.rb, is there a difference between “scope :user do” and “as :user do” ?
[01:02:41] baweaver: and man did it come in handy
[01:02:59] baweaver: mwlang: haven't heard of as, so not sure.
[01:03:37] mwlang: I have a new guy working on my project…instead of adding new routes to the existing scope :user do block…he added whole new one. :-S
[01:04:29] dnewkerk: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:05:27] mwlang: strange, no example of “as :user do” in the Routing Guide.
[01:05:45] mwlang: I am assuming they are equivalents.
[01:05:50] B1n4r10: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:07:11] smathy: mwlang, the `as` option is usually for the path helper names, weird that it would also be valid in that context.
[01:08:25] mwlang: smathy: it *is* weird!

[01:16:45] dopie: I need your powers!!
[01:18:46] smathy: dopie, https://gist.github.com/staycreativedesign/21f200ddcc9a5694c728#file-steps_controller_spec-rb-L44 you're using a model there `jim` and Rails is doing what most people mean when they do that which is calling its `.id` method and passing that integer as the value of `user`
[01:18:57] smathy: dopie, so your action is being called with params of: { user: 1 }
[01:19:06] smathy: dopie, so params.require(:user) == `
[01:19:15] kies^: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:19:42] smathy: dopie, hence the error because you're expecting that to be a hash full of attributes.

[01:21:08] zeknox: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:21:38] tibra: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:22:21] smathy: dopie, well you seem to be trying to test some sort of upload method, you need to supply the attributes that are expected by your upload_documents action.
[01:23:02] smathy: dopie, you probably ALSO need the user id in there, seeing as that seems to be for an existing user.

[02:32:43] jottr: Hello everyone. I am having trouble booting a rails app, which uses haml in conjunction with tilt. I get the following error: undefined method `register_engine' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError)
[02:32:52] rhizome: what's "tilt?"
[02:32:56] jottr: Here's the complete stack trace
[02:33:03] jottr: https://gist.github.com/jottr/2fdb91c541b48c1c8151
[02:33:18] jottr: ^ and the respective initializer
[02:33:33] rhizome: where does that line come from?

[02:36:34] Maletor: has joined #RubyOnRails
[02:37:39] rhizome: everything i can find on tilt is old
[02:38:15] rhizome: why are you using it? it seems maybe redundant?
[02:39:22] jottr: rhizome: It's an app I'm taking over. So no idea why it has been used.
[02:40:00] rhizome: well that init line appears to be rails 3
[02:40:19] rhizome: but if it's all haml anyway, why not just use haml?
[02:40:45] smoitra: has joined #RubyOnRails
[02:42:59] jottr: rhizome: Hm. Strange thing is, the app is a Rails4 app actually running in production. I've just added configuration for Fog and made a few other minor changes.
[02:43:11] jottr: It's weird that it is tripping over that line now.
[02:43:17] rhizome: does that instance have the same init?

[02:43:46] pyemkey: has joined #RubyOnRails
[02:44:08] jottr: rhizome: yes
[02:45:44] jottr: Hm. So commenting out that initializer leads to a new error:
[02:47:19] jottr: https://gist.github.com/jottr/be50f4e08376d04570e2
[02:47:48] jottr: the timeout.rb initializer is actually not in production
[02:47:51] rhizome: have you like done bundle install and everything?
[02:47:59] jottr: rhizome: sure
[02:48:42] rhizome: weird. was the app ever not 4.2+?
[02:52:08] IFrank00: has joined #RubyOnRails
[02:53:09] jottr: yes. It currently is gem 'rails', '~> 4.1', '>= 4.1.14.1'
[02:54:18] jottr: The production version is '4.1.0' which I bumped to '4.1.14.1'
[02:54:30] jottr: ...in development
[02:54:57] rhizome: i'm just seeing this: from /Users/jottr/dev/mge/mge-rails/vendor/bundle/gems/railties-4.2.5.1/lib/rails/engine.rb:652:in `block in...
[02:55:02] tfittsy: has joined #RubyOnRails
[02:56:13] jottr: rhizome: What does that ^ tell you?
[02:56:27] rhizome: railties-4.2.5.1
[02:58:58] jottr: rhizome: Ah. Weird. Here are the Gemfile and Gemfile.lock: https://gist.github.com/jottr/3979f437c18060b01d63
[02:59:37] jottr: So it actually is Rails 4.2
[03:00:06] jottr: But does that point to a possible root of the problem?

[13:42:48] chubijs: @tbuehlmann, Im not sure. Let me put it this way - after user.new and giving it email, username and password, when im trying to do user.save it should throw out an error and ask for password confirmation (as far as I understand) and not allow me to add the user to db. But it does not ask for the password_conf and does not give me an error
[13:43:57] chubijs: @sevenseacat, I was under the impression that all i need to do is get the gem, add password_digest to my table and include has_secure_password in my model

[13:46:14] chubijs: has_secure_password does not ask for password_confirmation before allowing the user to be saved to db

[13:46:30] sevenseacat: right, so add a validation
[13:46:52] lambao_: has joined #RubyOnRails
[13:47:24] tbuehlmann: once again, that validation is present, it's added when calling .has_secure_password, it just allows for blank values

[18:15:57] droptone: In fact I haven't found one user on Freenode who has performed this task in the week or so I've periodically asked.

[18:16:21] pipework: droptone: Turn all endpoints but / into ones that don't render layout when you request them over ajax.
[18:16:43] slash_nick: droptone: but why.

[18:17:31] slash_nick: droptone: no, why are you asking?
[18:17:34] droptone: pipework: Yes, you modify your controllers so they return JSON and you make AJAX calls
[18:17:50] pipework: droptone: That's 90% of conversion work.
[18:18:00] droptone: slash_nick: Why am I asking? Because, it's complex work and it would be nice if I could brainstorm with someone familiar?
[18:18:22] slash_nick: droptone: so what are you brainstorming on?
[18:18:22] pipework: The AJAX calls and then just converting the view to not render a partial. I've done JSON responses with embedded escaped HTML that's been ran through erb, but also includes a 'target' for the page and other info.
[18:18:52] pipework: Just checkout a new branch and spike it out.
[18:19:06] droptone: Yes, I mean I'm well into the project, I have auth working via AngularDevise and I have the static pages complete, I'm currently working on repairing the "pretty URLs" issue with Rails routing and forms.
[18:19:28] pipework: Turn and endpoint into supporting ajax no layout responses, and then convert that part of the app into single page style from the home page.
[18:19:44] droptone: Yes, the base app is already functional.
[18:20:02] pipework: Then what else is there to bother with besides how you decide to implement the frontend?
[18:20:28] pipework: I like ElementalJS for things in the DOM I want to bind to.
[18:20:49] droptone: pipework: Specific question that I'll undoubtedly figure out but that I would enjoy discussing with someone knowledgable in the field include the specifics of "altering nav template injected based on User.type" and image uploading via paperclip.
[18:21:06] droptone: And really, I need to implement my first form, now that the base app, auth, and the static pages are done.
[18:21:59] pipework: Ah, when you get to those questions, let us know and maybe someone of such expertise can lend a handful of packets towards discussing that kind of thing.

[18:30:20] droptone: I don't know if you need mor ethan that
[18:31:11] droptone: But the question is, auth is working fine via Devise. The question is, the way the previous Rails 4.2.x site worked was, I had basic code in my home controller that would check for user_signed_in? and if true, it would check User.type, and depending on the type would redirect the user to their "homepage"
[18:31:27] droptone: We are using STI where users of types, Admins, Artists, etc inherit from the root User table.
[18:32:07] droptone: So I could use help determining that logic, as well as the logic for switching the injected _nav.html based on whether or not the user is signed in, and if signed in, User.type
[18:32:59] droptone: I suppose in authCtrl.js, on $state.go() I could somehow check User.type and flip the state to the proper "homepage" for them.

[18:34:17] droptone: Because as it stands now, the _nav and the _footer are injected via <ng-include> in the core application.html.erb layout.
[18:34:33] droptone: Meaning they're static, they're not altered based on user.type, and because assets aren't refreshed it's not like the layout will be refreshed.

[18:39:40] droptone: Right but what might be a specific example of the logic for such?
[18:39:52] droptone: Should I take the _nav out of the root layout and inject it manually in the template?
[18:39:58] droptone: I mean, the individual state templates.
[18:40:05] droptone: That might be the trick, no?
[18:40:21] dionysus69: has joined #RubyOnRails
[18:41:13] droptone: I get the feeling, since the root application layout is rendered once, being an SPA and all, perhaps I should break that out and put it in the individual state declerations, if possible, or in the templates themselves.

[20:10:06] passick: Hey guys. I have a problem with setting up the elastic search. I am following this guide (http://aaronvb.com/articles/intro-to-elasticsearch-ruby-on-rails-part-1.html), but when I type User.import, I get “ArgumentError: users does not exist to be imported into. Use create_index! or the :force option to create it.”
[20:10:36] passick: What may be the problem?
[20:13:08] passick: I’ve tried googling this error message, but nothing useful came up.
