[00:04:51] johnr38: I was recently excited about Turbolinks 3 and Partial replacement. It got me excited to think that we might not have to do things like SPA with React or Ember. However, I've just learned that this is no longer the case and now Turbolinks 5 will not have this feature. Would it be safe to say, Turbolinks Classic with the partial replacement is a viable way to proceed?
[00:05:18] johnr38: Nate Berkopec todo mvc with this was impressive

[00:24:54] tfitts: tubbo: after our discussion of liquid and spree-multi stores I'm now leaning towards shopify...
[00:25:43] rafaelfranca: johnr38: turbograph is being used by Shopify and we don't have plans to stop developing it
[00:26:20] rafaelfranca: so, if you want partial replacement, I'd recommend turbograph (although I personally don't like the partial replacement idea)
[00:26:24] drale2k: when i return a partial via a job and ActionCable, in that partial i do not have "current_user" available
[00:26:30] drale2k: how is this supposed to work=
[00:26:36] johnr38: Thanks Rafael
[00:27:27] drale2k: even though i have set self.current_user in the Connection
[00:27:39] drale2k: but in the context of the job, current_user is nothing
[00:28:21] drale2k: not sure if this is worth the hassle, polling with ajax calls was a ton easier to maintain
[00:30:38] drale2k: and you get zero error logs for this. I had to figure out that "current_user" in the partial was the problem

[06:19:34] tildes: I would like to send all data to my rails frontend as json, from the rails backend. I am at the point where the json renders correctly as json in the browser. How can I tell Rails to use a view template, and how can I access the json object there?
[06:20:54] mhoungbo: has joined #RubyOnRails
[06:21:24] jonee: has joined #RubyOnRails
[06:21:37] sevenseacat: can you clarify that question? rails will render views by default for actions
[06:24:24] pinkerton: has joined #RubyOnRails
[06:24:49] baweaver: rendering specific json: JBuilder. Interfacing with that is if it were a model: Virtus serialization among other options.
[06:25:21] sevenseacat: i'm not sure how that relates to the question
[06:25:31] sevenseacat: but then again, it needs clarification
[06:25:43] pawnbox: has joined #RubyOnRails
[06:25:52] baweaver: assuming a SOA type pattern, it sounds similar
[06:27:55] sinkensabe: has joined #RubyOnRails
[06:28:08] tildes: sevenseacat, baweaver: I'll try to clarify
[06:28:41] tildes: I'm building a 100% rails app, and I realized I'm not comfortable with handing @models to my views.
[06:29:28] tildes: So I looked into how to pass json instead to the views
[06:29:30] baweaver: JBuilder lets you build JSON in a DSL
[06:30:17] tildes: I looked at jbuilder, but I'm not sure if I should use it or not. I already get well formatted json for index and show actions in my controller
[06:31:00] tildes: I would like to find a way to deploy a template, where I can parse it and show it to user
[06:31:42] tildes: maybe I'm on a strange path here, to recap, I just got here because I didn't want to have my view templates ramble through actionrecord structures, or worse, call model methods they shouldn't
[06:32:08] baweaver: short of having a frontend framework it's a bit of an odd concern to have
[06:32:17] tildes: as for jbuilder, I understood building json, as literally creating the json document
[06:32:50] tildes: baweaver: so a good practice in rails is just to pass a @model to the view, and let the view do things with it
[06:32:51] sleungcy: has joined #RubyOnRails
[06:33:12] matthewd: So I think you just want to set @json = stuff, then render the view and only use @json in the view
[06:33:17] baweaver: If you fully control the view, then why not?
[06:33:19] tildes: the model is quite nested and somehow it didn't feel comfortable anymore
[06:33:46] matthewd: (which yes, is a very peculiar-sounding design choice, and peculiar-sounding design choices are rarely a good idea)
[06:34:07] tildes: matthewd: I could do that. can you see any downside, can it be considered weird or something like that
[06:34:08] baweaver: You _could_ always just use presenters to format the object or rather restrict what can be called
[06:34:22] tildes: matthewd: (ah, there's the answer)
[06:34:48] matthewd: Or more accurately, are only appropriate *after* you are familiar with the normal rails way, and can make a reasoned decision to go off the beaten path to meet specific goals
[06:34:55] tildes: baweaver: and then pass the presenter to the view instead of the model. maybe some gem can even do the replacement directly
[06:35:17] baweaver: you're probably over complicating things quite honestly.
[06:36:00] tildes: baweaver: perhaps I am
[06:36:10] tildes: thanks for the feedback
[06:37:46] tildes: I might try both suggestions anyway just to see what it looks like. This is leisure right :)

[15:05:35] mrgreenfur: you need to see if it’s in the page source being returned
[15:05:40] mrgreenfur: and if not, check the manifest file to include it
[15:06:29] arup_r: mrgreenfur: use duck typing.
[15:07:45] arup_r: Make a separate ruby class inside the `models/` dir and then split all the then expressions also a basic ruby class and then call them using dynamic method dispatching.. etc
[15:07:48] mrgreenfur: arup_r: isn’t that the same as subclassing? e.g. defining subclasses that inherit from MyModel and each gets a run_model function?
[15:08:20] dionysus69: has joined #RubyOnRails
[15:08:35] mrgreenfur: hrmm, hadn’t though of using a basic ruby class. how do you mean ‘dynamic method dispatching’?
[15:08:51] mrgreenfur: I guess inside run_model in the gist i could do result = LinearModel.Run(data)
[15:08:52] mrgreenfur: something liket hat?
[15:09:05] arup_r: your current method pattern looks like falls into that design pattern
[15:09:15] arup_r: mrgreenfur: you are close

[15:10:28] foli_: @mrgreenfur . there is alot of info here
[15:11:22] arup_r: mrgreenfur: basically you will have a class like Parabolic, Linear etc..
[15:12:52] mrgreenfur: arup_r: cool, thanks. Then in my run_model, I still have a case for the type, but instead of runnign code inside the class, I initliaze the correct model and run a ‘run model’ function?
[15:13:02] mrgreenfur: @foli_ look under ‘manifests and directives'
[15:13:35] foli_: @mrgreenfur ok
[15:13:43] mrgreenfur: also make sure your’re including the manifest in the layout/view. Or you can include it directly, but it’s not as nice
[15:15:06] arup_r: mrgreenfur: if you craft it properlly, you don't need any case check, you can make the class as per the model_type string. And those string can be converted to class using ruby and then call the method by sending the argument as you need. That's an example of Composition.
[15:15:55] mrgreenfur: arup_r: ahh, so something line send(model_type).Run_model(data)
[15:16:16] mrgreenfur: err (model_type.constantize).Run_model(data)

[16:18:10] trifling-jest: it won't connect to rails if it did not have a password right?

[17:47:06] hiljusti: if you're already running in development environment, it should already be handling most of that already

[17:49:19] havenwood: acosonic_: Yeah, the Rails dev env has fancy code reloading stuff so you don't need to use something like Shotgun like you might for other Rack app adapters: https://github.com/rtomayko/shotgun

[23:59:02] kr1shnak: Hi. Is it possible to use simple_form to render a form for batch creating multiple instances of a single Model class? Eg: to create a number of Client models in one go, I have the controller set up: @new_clients = [Client.new, Client.new, Client.new]. How would I go about using simple_form to render the form for @new_clients?
