[00:20:18] Assimilater: i followed this guide for installing ruby on rails: https://gorails.com/setup/ubuntu/15.10#final-steps when I try to do sudo rails server -p 80 i see "sudo: rails: command not found" can anyone help me in starting the server?
[00:20:55] peterppp: rails server -p 8080
[00:21:04] peterppp: and then point your browser to localhost:8080
[00:21:39] Assimilater: i'm actually testing this on a remote server hosted by 3rd party rather than localhost
[00:22:16] Assimilater: to eliminate firewall as the reason for my page failing to load I wanted to test port 80 which *should* not have any problems
[00:22:42] peterppp: do you just want to find out whether rails works?
[00:22:49] peterppp: in that case you could use netcat
[00:23:02] peterppp: on the remote server, I mean
[00:23:26] Assimilater: never used it
[00:23:36] peterppp: as far as I know, the server that comes with rails is not meant for production
[00:25:22] peterppp: "netcat localhost 8080" and then type "GET /"
[00:25:27] peterppp: followed by two empty lines
[00:26:05] Assimilater: well, I got an html document
[00:26:21] Assimilater: so I guess that means it's my firewall or something the host is doing on their router :/
[00:26:22] baweaver: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:27:01] peterppp: sudo is something you find on a ubuntu or the like, what kind of operating system is running on the server?
[00:28:04] peterppp: if it's a shared environment they probably don't want to give you super user rights?
[00:28:16] Assimilater: i have sudo priveliges
[00:28:39] peterppp: then execute "rails server -p 8080" as is
[00:28:55] Assimilater: yes, that works
[00:29:05] Assimilater: I just wasn't able to load the page from my web browser remotely
[00:29:15] jottr_: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:29:25] Assimilater: i was using sudo to try and get it on port 80 (which I thought was free of error with port forwarding/firewall/etc)

[00:30:58] jenrzzz: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:31:08] peterppp: rather than 80
[00:31:35] Assimilater: oh, you want to see that error
[00:32:21] peterppp: I don't really understand your situation, the error message you quoted above seemed to indicate that there is no "sudo" or I seem to have gotten that wrong
[00:33:54] Assimilater: ok, so if I don't use sudo, i get this: http://pastebin.com/YvZecbp9
[00:34:11] Assimilater: apparently I'm behind the times in pastes
[00:34:50] Assimilater: I'm confused about the error that follows when I try to do sudo myself :/

[00:47:19] ebbflowgo: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:47:53] Assimilater: it shows me "rails:" without any info after :/
[00:48:13] peterppp: did you execute rails as superuser?
[00:49:15] Assimilater: ok, as the user "assimilater" (no sudo or sudo -i) when I use rails server the server starts running. As "assimilater" when I use whereis rails it shows me "rails:"
[00:49:47] Assimilater: i have been unable to execute rails with sudo
[00:50:01] peterppp: you did not install rails using apt-get?
[00:50:23] Assimilater: no, i used the tutorial linked: https://gorails.com/setup/ubuntu/15.10#final-steps
[00:50:42] Assimilater: apparently this tutorial isn't good snuff
[00:51:34] peterppp: perhaps it sits in /usr/bin/rails?
[00:52:07] Assimilater: should apt-get install rails suffice?
[00:53:16] pwnd_nsfw: err, don't install rails using apt-get lol
[00:54:21] Assimilater: is that because it's older? seems like ubuntu's package manager only has rails 3.2.16
[00:54:40] pwnd_nsfw: it's just dongs way to do it
[00:54:44] pwnd_nsfw: use a version manager
[00:55:00] Assimilater: i think the tutorial i used used rbenv
[00:55:14] Assimilater: the problem is I can't use it as sudo
[00:55:54] pwnd_nsfw: rbenv seems to be the preffered
[00:55:58] pwnd_nsfw: I use rvm with no issues though
[00:56:19] Assimilater: honestly I'm getting to the point I don't care what I use as long as it works :/ lol
[00:56:41] pwnd_nsfw: why do you need to use sudo..

[00:58:51] jen_: I am working with Spree commerce and having a tough time modifying cart pages…if anyone can assist, much appreciated.

[01:25:20] Assimilater: is using brew going to fix that?

[01:29:15] smathy: Assimilater, nup, that's an issue with your sudo setup not preserving the PATH env var so not being able to find the rails you've installed as your user.

[01:29:45] smathy: Assimilater, actually, no idea whether rvm commands work at all through sudo because rvm does hinky things.

[01:30:51] Assimilater: smathy: you mentioned brew, how would i use that instead of how this guide installs rbenv?
[01:31:03] smathy: Assimilater, `brew` is an OSX utility.
[01:31:18] Assimilater: oh; i'm on ubuntu :/
[01:32:03] smathy: ...but no installer is going to reconfigure your sudoers for you.

[01:44:29] smathy: Assimilater, well, there's just no reason to use it in dev.
[01:45:01] smathy: Assimilater, if you wanted to try to understand a production environment then you won't be using `rails server` in production, so setup an httpd and a rack app server and do things properly.
[01:45:58] Assimilater: smathy: so eventually a rails website will use apache or similar program in a production environment?
[01:46:12] fryguy: no, not necessarily
[01:46:58] smathy: Assimilater, yes, your httpd is what listens on port 80.
[01:47:24] adkdev: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:47:29] Assimilater: admittedly I'm new to ruby/rails; I'm teachable though as far as best practices so long as I can get straight what is being taught
[01:47:41] Assimilater: fryguy: what do you mean, not necessarily?
[01:48:10] smathy: Assimilater, I never like talking new people through setting up a production server, there are too many ways to get it wrong and expose your app to various problems or security gotchas, etc..
[01:48:26] Assimilater: smathy: that's understandable
[01:48:51] fryguy: Assimilater: the advice to "not use rails server in production' isn't entirely incorrect, but it is a bit misleading
[01:48:54] smathy: Assimilater, it's not hard to learn, but it's important to learn yourself.
[01:50:01] Assimilater: well I think what's also important is when I get ready to release this site I have a good team backing me too
[01:50:07] Assimilater: with more experience than me
[01:50:08] smathy: fryguy, huh? You're suggesting that it's feasible to use `rails server` in production?
[01:50:25] Assimilater: but in theory
[01:50:35] Assimilater: if i worked on this in a dev environment with a rails server
[01:50:43] fryguy: smathy: it's plausible to have a configuration such that rails server will create an app server appropriate for production use
[01:50:51] smathy: Assimilater, yes, a good team - exactly.
[01:50:52] Dreamer3_: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:50:57] Assimilater: i use the rails framework for database management, views, controllers etc
[01:51:04] fryguy: i think it's quite important to differentiate the roles "web server" and "app server" when designing a production infrastructure
[01:51:27] Assimilater: that *should* transition into a production environment in some way that i'll learn or someone in a team will assist me without too much trouble, right?
[01:51:49] smathy: fryguy, interesting, how so?
[01:52:22] ace05: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:52:22] diegoviola: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:52:28] smathy: Assimilater, yes exactly.
[01:52:35] Assimilater: smathy: thanks :)
[01:52:50] smathy: Assimilater, you're welcome.
[01:53:00] fryguy: smathy: rails, by definition, requires a ruby process to exist somewhere to service rails requests. That server is never going to be as good at traditional http serving or http edge cases on a public internet, but it is required to exist.
[01:53:02] Assimilater: if you don't mind me asking, how would you advise I find like-minded people to work on this project with me?
[01:53:14] fryguy: so there is an inherent need for both roles to exist
[01:53:58] smathy: fryguy, no, I meant how do you configure your app so `rails server` will run a production-appropriate server?
[01:54:10] fryguy: whether that rails server is started via rackup, pumactl, unicorn, passenger automagic, or rails server with appropriate gems to make it bootstrap something expected doesn't REALLY matter
[01:54:44] wethu: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:56:01] fryguy: smathy: i've only begun to look at some of this recently as our infrastructure is still passenger, but I'm not totally sure of the differences between "RAILS_ENV=production rails server" with the puma gem in your Gemfile and just running pumactl start

[02:08:05] smathy: fryguy, ok, so the biggest difference is that you can't restart nicely because your puma is running in your `ruby ./bin/rails server` process, so you'd just have to kill PID which would be nasty.
[02:08:56] smathy: fryguy, you should ALWAYS run puma directly, either with `puma` or as you already are with `pumactl` - so you can do things like the phased restart.
[02:09:14] fryguy: sure, signal handling seems like something deserving of some consideration. however I would argue that an infrastructure that causes problems if the ruby service is unexpectedly terminated isn't a good design
[02:09:41] youch: has joined #RubyOnRails
[02:10:50] smathy: fryguy, I'm not sure what you think the alternative is there, how would any "infrastructure" protect clients against problems if the app server process was killed?
[02:12:16] quazimodo: has joined #RubyOnRails
[02:12:56] fryguy: reverse proxies come to mind immediately
[02:15:03] smathy: fryguy, so an update request comes in, the proxy hands off to your app server, your rails app commits the DB transaction but before it can send a response the puma child is killed because someone restarted the rails server process. A reverse proxy won't prevent that browser getting no response to their request, nor protect the person not receiving the information that their DB change was actually enacted.
[02:15:40] fryguy: sure, but if you are knowingly going to restart the server, you can stop requests from going to it before you restart it
[02:17:33] smathy: fryguy, or just use the puma process and it does all the right things for you, doesn't restart workers that are mid-request, leaves some workers online to handle requests while others are restarting, etc..
[02:18:36] smathy: fryguy, point is that there's no infrastructure that can replace that functionality, your suggestion isn't providing the same features, it's trading availability for consistency.
[02:18:59] fryguy: that hasn't been my experience, especially when changing configurations. and considering you need the deploy code to support adding/removing servers probably anyone, just relying on pumactl misses a lot of stability and robustness edge cases
[02:19:00] dandaman: has joined #RubyOnRails
[02:19:19] fryguy: smathy: you also might want to review my original statement about the matter
[02:19:32] fryguy: which isn't that I think you SHOULD use rails server over pumactl
[02:19:41] smathy: fryguy, "just relying"? No one said we were just relying on it. We were comparing running puma/pumactl directly vs running puma through `rails server`.
[02:19:42] fryguy: just that a blanket statement not to use it misses some nuance
[02:20:14] smathy: fryguy, I disagree, I don't think it's EVER better, and I think the problems it introduces always rule it out for production use.
[02:21:32] smathy: fryguy, your original statement was that not to use `rails server` in production is misleading. I disagree for the reasons I've mentioned.

[16:37:51] EasyRider0: jhass: I think I did that before, but then I actually ran into the problem that Sidekiq wanted to queue a non existing conversation into ES
[16:37:56] EasyRider0: and returned a 500
[16:38:16] EasyRider0: :) I was tearing hairs out

[16:40:15] jhass: less save but a lot faster variant: conv.messages.update_all(conversation_id: lead.conversation.id)
[16:41:01] jhass: probably even prevents materializing the .messages collection and thus might then even fix your issue

[16:53:26] EasyRider0: enqueue to elasticsearch*

If, at some point, I am going to want to get all events related to an account... am I better to just include an account_id on the alarm_event model? Just so that I don't have to call Account.meters.alarms.alarm_event or some insane chained query?
[16:58:43] EasyRider0: yep, it's not sidekiq's problem actually, it's searchkick that creates the job

[19:09:53] helpa: mrbubbles: Don't ask "does anyone use <thing>?". It's better to just state your problem and if anyone has used <thing> they will most likely answer.
[19:10:05] mrbubbles: thanks smathy
[19:10:27] mrbubbles: okay so I'm using AASAM and it uses transitions between various states. That's fine, but I'm using ember js so my update function just receives a hash of values
[19:11:01] mrbubbles: That works fine (as it currently directly assigsn the values to the AASM model) but I'd rather use the transitions so that callbacks are called. so just trying to work out how to "translate" the update request into an event call
[19:11:27] mrbubbles: I think I'll need to check which properties have changed and then call the transition function instead of doing "update"

[19:13:44] smathy: mrbubbles, sounds like you might not really be using the state-machine paradigm properly, that seems supported by the fact that you're talking about "transitons" and "transition functions".
[19:14:00] smathy: mrbubbles, ...where you should be thinking about firing events on your model.
[19:14:45] mrbubbles: sorry might have got some of my terminology mixed up - it's been a long day
[19:15:08] mrbubbles: I can call alarm.trigger! or alarm.reset! to transition from one state to another
[19:15:45] mrbubbles: but my API controller just receives an updated object with { status: reset } or { status: triggered }
[19:16:05] mrbubbles: So in that way the state of the model is set but not via the event being fired
[19:16:09] mrbubbles: Does that make more sense?
[19:16:49] smathy: mrbubbles, yes, I understood all that.
[19:17:20] ayoros: has joined #RubyOnRails
[19:17:25] arup_r: DragonPunch hello :D
[19:17:30] smathy: mrbubbles, but my point here is that you're still thinking in terms of state and transitions, rather than events.
[19:17:53] smathy: mrbubbles, ie. you shouldn't even be passing through the state in the hash to your update action.
[19:19:16] smathy: mrbubbles, the API is events, not transitions, you need to be thinking about your AASM model more as something that receives events.
[19:19:51] jstransky: has joined #RubyOnRails
[19:20:23] mrbubbles: Hmmm but I'm using Ember and Ember Data
[19:20:33] mrbubbles: so that's just the way that I receieve the updated object through
[19:27:02] smathy: mrbubbles, not all tools/approaches are designed to be compatible.
[19:27:10] mrbubbles: Hehe no I'm learning that nwo
[19:27:26] smathy: mrbubbles, the concept of a dumb layer between your front-end model and your back-end persistence is not compatible with the AASM paradigm.
[19:28:14] smathy: mrbubbles, in an AASM model the API becomes the events, you never change the state field directly.
[19:28:56] smathy: mrbubbles, the whole power of AASM is that you configure your model to receive events, and react to them appropriately.
