[00:50:47] hnanon: This is what I have: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/04b60b165d2d1430a7073d2b61b5281b
[00:53:03] roamingdog: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:53:34] weaksauce: hnanon you really need to add the full methods of controller and model if you want help. just the rescue part is meaningless
[00:54:49] Radar: what weaksauce said, but in a nicer tone
[00:55:10] hnanon: 1 min, please. Sorry.
[00:55:54] weaksauce: Radar i asked for it earlier but it was ignored :D

[00:59:25] hnanon: I'm a little embarrassed but: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/503e288bcb0983be009116904571f71d
[01:04:35] weaksauce: hnanon sorry if that came off gruff. anyway, put some puts statements inside each of the logic branches including the rescue statements and see exactly what branch it's taking
[01:05:59] Radar: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/503e288bcb0983be009116904571f71d#file-companies_controller-rb-L5 You could return above this line and remove the else completely.

[01:06:31] Radar: You could return unless the model is valid at this point, removing the need for a very long if / end wrapping

[02:24:43] sevenseacat: yes, it is normal. thats the URL you submit the form to.

[02:34:04] sevenseacat: why are you trying to do that, out of curiosity?
[02:34:21] Ispira: Setting up my production server for making sure everything works
[02:34:32] sevenseacat: please don't use webrick in production.
[02:34:32] Ispira: just running $ rails server does not let me connect
[02:34:45] Ispira: no no I mean production server as in the vps is hosted on
[02:34:51] Ispira: I'm using Apache for production.
[02:34:57] sevenseacat: and 'hello world app' 'setting up production server' seems a bit... awkward
[02:35:06] sevenseacat: so why do you need this to work if you're not going to use it?
[02:35:20] Ispira: >installing rails on production server >making sure rails is working
[02:35:45] sevenseacat: if `rails server` works, then its working
[02:35:56] sevenseacat: if `rails console` works, then its working
[02:36:03] sevenseacat: you dont need this IP configuration
[02:36:29] Ispira: I wanted to be able to actually connect to it to make _sure_ it was working
[02:36:32] Ispira: but good enough
[02:37:49] sevenseacat: I think doing so would be irrelevant, given you're testing the http stack and server configuration there, not rails itself

They will have multiple proctors for the study hall sessions. Sometimes they study hall session will be an advising session. During that session the study hall topic will be advising. My question is should I create a separate model for “advisors” or should the student model know who their advisor

[18:29:18] tubbo: so why would the option label and the option text ever be different?
[18:29:33] smathy: tubbo, why aren't you annoyed by the same thing re the value attribute of an option?
[18:30:03] PaulePanter: tubbo: Often numbers are used for the values, and the text is the visible label.
[18:30:10] tubbo: smathy: why do you keep wanting to know why i'm annoyed by things? i'm more annoyed by your nagging.
[18:30:10] PaulePanter: “visible label”.
[18:30:57] tubbo: usually i use <option value=""> to indicate what the value would be, like i've been doing my whole life?
[18:31:02] PaulePanter: smathy: So do you mean "include_blank: &nbsp;"?
[18:31:39] smathy: PaulePanter, I really mean having Rails changed so that's what `include_blank: true` does, ie. so that it produces valid HTML5.
[18:32:01] smathy: PaulePanter, I mean right now you can use :prompt for that if you wanted.

[18:47:23] Ebok: Alright. I've got a complicated ActiveRecord/SQL query here that I'm trying to figure out how to parse. The schema can be aliased into Neighborhoods, Houses, Occupants, Occupant_ratings. I need to sort a query that is getting all of the Neighborhoods and including the houses, and order them by the sum of a single column (int) from occupant_ratings.
[18:47:27] Ebok: The original query is easy Neighborhood.all.include(:houses)
[18:48:27] Ebok: However I'm having trouble determining how I need to structure the orderby.

[21:39:58] fox_mulder_cp: !gist lz-dylan
[21:40:10] baweaver: have to be recognized by helpa
[21:40:25] lz-dylan: I'm trying to follow the guide at http://www.sitepoint.com/enumerated-types-with-activerecord-and-postgresql/ in the 'Integrating ActiveRecord::Enum with PostgreSQL Enumerated Types' section (and I'm on Rails 4.1). My migration looks like: https://gist.github.com/arubis/8c794601814cd42d9370ed329bc783f9
[21:40:59] lz-dylan: When I run `db:migrate`, though, I get `unknown OID 191893: failed to recognize type of 'login_preference'. It will be treated as String.`
[21:41:03] futilegames: has joined #RubyOnRails
[21:41:25] lz-dylan: Works OK using the :integer type instead, but I'd like to avoid having magic numbers in my db if possible.
[21:41:37] baweaver: that's how Enum works
[21:41:58] baweaver: I'm not really a fan of it either, so I just avoid using it
[21:42:20] baweaver: tends to make querying a pain as well

[21:42:55] ebbflowgo: has joined #RubyOnRails
[21:43:44] lz-dylan: Indeed, which was what made that guide ^^ so appealing -- the suggestion being that you can use PostgreSQL's builtin `ENUM` in tandem with AR.
[21:44:04] lz-dylan: Is the author just full of crap? :/
[21:44:45] baweaver: Not sure, haven't used it
[21:45:00] baweaver: sitepoint is hit or miss though
[21:45:00] VeryBewitching: You're not meant to use psql's enum field
[21:45:30] VeryBewitching: enum in AR is an integer using the index of the collection specified in the model.
[21:46:01] lz-dylan: Hmm. Okay. I might just use a string and add some validations in the model.
[21:46:15] baweaver: probably easier
[21:46:23] VeryBewitching: lz-dylan: Probably easiest if you want to the rows to have human-readable values
[21:46:28] fox_mulder_cp: ooh, enum enum... i reaaly can't think how to recognize my types of servers (mail, dns, sql, etc) and link it into rate plan and deployment software into this servers
[21:47:02] lz-dylan: Cool. Well, not as shiny as I'd like, but that seems like a way forward. Thanks!
[21:47:50] weaksauce: lz-dylan are you using a different db type for dev vs. test vs. production?
[21:48:02] lz-dylan: weaksauce: nah, they're all pg
[21:48:23] weaksauce: interesting. the sitepoint article seems to be pretty sure you can do that
[21:48:42] lz-dylan: yeah, that's why I was surprised when it so definitively failed
[21:48:48] lz-dylan: I mean, the SQL runs without error, of course
[21:48:51] VeryBewitching: weaksauce: You can, but you have to specify the values yourself, it's not auto-magic. AR defaults to int
[21:49:28] VeryBewitching: enum perms: { read_only: 'read_only' }
[21:49:28] brent__: has joined #RubyOnRails
[21:49:35] lz-dylan: but AR doesn't recognize the custom column type, and doesn't seem to do enough inspection to figure out that it's an enum
[21:49:46] weaksauce: VeryBewitching the enum was setup according to the article and it failed on the create column part
[21:50:08] VeryBewitching: Was the type created first?
[21:50:10] weaksauce: looks like lz-dylan dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's

[21:50:23] fox_mulder_cp: i really think, that enum can be improved such as some bools - man?, woman?, human?/
[21:50:29] VeryBewitching: CREATE TYPE gender AS ENUM ('male', 'female', 'not_sure', 'prefer_not_to_disclose');
[21:51:26] weaksauce: lz-dylan can you gist the entire stack trace from your migration?
[21:52:26] lz-dylan: weaksauce: yeah, in just a few minutes--I'm doing a full db restore to ensure that I don't have anything crufty from all the migrate/rollback cycles

[22:32:15] lz-dylan: there's definitely some crufty old gems in there that're version-locked to the stone age, but it'd be worthwhile to see the results.
