[00:01:14] siaw23: i have an image in app/assets/images/my_image.png. how do i use image_tag to access it. the api doc says that image_tag generates <img alt="Rails" src="/assets/rails.png" />
[00:01:23] siaw23: but my image is in app/assets/images/my_image.png

[01:07:42] bazzy: tag: Radar (not sure who else to tag)
[01:08:23] bazzy: well these aren't really questions as much as ... I need more information to understand the following:
[01:08:41] bazzy: 1) what respond_to really is .. i mean I "get it" but I want to know more ..
[01:08:55] bazzy: 2) why they have both a html and json assignment

[02:45:57] bazzy: Radar, I apologize in advance if I ask you any "obvious" questions that may be present by looking in the book's index (which I plan to do) .. I know the frustration of someone asking you something you've already documented .. although I'm not sure you ever feel that way

[02:46:31] bazzy: hahaha np
[02:47:47] bazzy: I couldn't find any mention of SSE .. I'm kind of interested in using it
[02:48:01] Radar: we don't talk about them in the book at all
[02:48:05] bazzy: (Server Side Events)
[02:48:36] bazzy: although if there is a resource you are confident in for RoR SSE I'd like to know about it
[02:49:35] Radar: I've never had to do it, so I wouldn't know
[02:51:56] bazzy: hm, maybe I should tell you why I'm interested in the first place .. I have a game "scoreboard" and I thought it would be cool for the client to update it whenever the backend got a scoreboard update .. I could do polling but something irks me about it .. or another long polling solution.. I don't know. What do you think?

[02:57:55] bazzy: Of course I classify this as a "want" ;)
[02:58:23] bazzy: I already have a "static" version .. actually brings me to my next question (for anyone at that)
[02:58:38] bazzy: (I know.. it's not static.. but I digress)
[03:00:02] bazzy: I am actually using Redis .. and have a model that IS NOT related to ActiveRecord that uses Redis gem to work with the data ... Then I suddenly realized this will not allow the kind of "db migrations" workflow that would be really nice to have .. I'm curious if there's something out there to get Redis to play nice with that kind of thing...
[03:00:43] bazzy: On the other hand .. It might be time to switch to a more traditional database for this kind of data *shrug*
[03:02:16] j_mcnally: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:03:01] bazzy: What else trips me up, is that I plan on using the model in both a pure Ruby project and a RoR project .. and I'm not knowledgable enough to know how to best maintain that sort of model..

[10:43:11] sevenseacat: ImmoveableOne: you have not posted the controller create action that processes the data from the form

[10:45:54] sevenseacat: @user = User.new(user_params)

[10:47:04] ImmoveableOne: yes, user_params has :address key which has params.
[10:48:05] ImmoveableOne: I used build_address in the new there.
[10:48:07] sevenseacat: if you understand that, then I'm afraid I don't understand what your problem is

[10:50:58] ImmoveableOne: I understand now.
[10:51:18] sevenseacat: I'd recommend reading through the getting started guide if you're not familiar with the MVC flow, which is what it sounds like
[10:51:38] sevenseacat: instead of just reading the raw rails code

[15:31:17] kareeoleez: jhass: maybe constants like A : [ A1, "Something", 34 ]
[15:31:32] jhass: you're only confusing me ever more
[15:31:45] jhass: try to explain what you want to do from the start, not referring to your initial or any code at all

[15:32:18] kareeoleez: makes sense ?
[15:33:16] jhass: so items = {name: [value, value], another_name: [value, value]} ?
[15:33:22] fox_mulder_cp: kareeoleez: u mean json structure, i think. it can has keys and arrays associated with it

[15:36:10] kareeoleez: makes sense ?

[16:21:40] mustmodify_: OK! I know it matters but someone remind me why. I can't remember. Say you have a site that's entirely behind a password, so search engines aren't relevant. And you have an action like "finalize a service order"... I know that should be a post instead of a get but can't think of a convincing argument why.
[16:22:05] mustmodify_: I mean, semantically it should be a post. But if you're one of those overly-pragmatic people, you'll ask, "But why must it be a post? A get would work."
[16:25:04] jhass: mustmodify_: say I, the attacker, know the route of that action for my victim and want my victim to hit it unintentionally. All I need is to get my victim to click on a link somewhere, either pointing to it directly or going through anything that redirects to it
[16:25:21] jhass: letting the victim execute a POST request for me is a lot harder
[16:25:49] jhass: submit a form and press reload for example
[16:25:56] jhass: not even that browsers submit automatically
[16:26:01] mustmodify_: I guess you would need to add some javascript to turn a link into a post.
[16:26:13] jhass: exactly, and then XSS protections trigger
[16:26:32] mustmodify_: great point, thank you.
[16:26:51] mustmodify_: POST actions are substantially protected from third-party attacks.
[16:27:08] jhass: let's say substantially more than GET ;)
[16:27:53] mustmodify_: though can't an XSS source indicate that it doesn't care about XSS? No I guess that doesn't make any sense. It must be on the local side. I guess I use that so infrequently that I re-learn about it every time. :)

[18:22:30] op3nsv: With each event there is an order and transaction associated and that all works great. Where I am stuck is now I am trying to implement a Discount Code mechanism.
[18:22:31] op3nsv: To see how to get it working I built a discount page with a form that if you click Apply it goes to an action called apply_discount. What I'm having trouble with is how do I change the price of event for the paypal purchase without affecting the DB. Since the discount code is based on which people enter the correction information?
[18:22:33] op3nsv: Here is the

[18:22:41] op3nsv: Right now both the express and new order action grab the @event from a before_filter so of course it will grab the price from the DB. What I am trying to find is a way for both of these actions to be able to grab the changed @event price but only on a per instance basis since some users will apply a discount code and others won't. And different discount codes will have different discount values

[22:16:35] Synthead: is there a way I can abort a job from being queued in before_enqueue (using Sidekiq)?
[22:17:19] Synthead: I know Resque will do this if you return false from before_enqueue, but Sidekiq doesn't seem to work this way

[22:18:04] smathy: anoob, probably best to try heroku support for that, they run a lot of things automatically, nothing to do with Rails.
