[02:59:54] prudhvi: how to approach for this
[02:59:55] aegis3121: You've given no indication of what the error is. You could try posting your console/log output to a gist and posting the gist here.

[03:03:57] aegis3121: Certainly looks like you're missing a database.yml file
[03:04:21] aegis3121: is "20131108040629" the directory where your rails application lives?
[03:04:53] prudhvi: @aegis3121: yes its the directory
[03:05:04] aegis3121: And...does the file it's looking for exist?
[03:05:11] prudhvi: i have a database.yml.copy file
[03:05:19] aegis3121: That's not what it's looking for.
[03:05:20] prudhvi: inside config folder
[03:05:25] prudhvi: it do exist
[03:05:27] yfeldblum: has joined #RubyOnRails
[03:05:34] aegis3121: it's looking for config/database.yml
[03:05:40] aegis3121: meaning that file. exactly.
[03:06:00] prudhvi: yes you are right...
[03:06:10] prudhvi: i have a database.ml.copy file
[03:06:17] yfeldblum: has joined #RubyOnRails

[03:07:16] aegis3121: You need a file...called config/database.yml
[03:07:46] prudhvi: i do have a database.yml.copy file inside the same folder
[03:08:11] aegis3121: again: it's not lookign for a file called config/database.yml.copy. It's looking for a file called config/database.yml
[03:08:46] prudhvi: @aegis3121: i have renamed it as database.yml, still same error
[03:10:15] aegis3121: so from your terminal doing `cat /home/mahesh/Desktop/20131108040629/config/database.yml` prints out your file's contents?
[03:10:39] prudhvi: @aegis3121: yes it does print

[03:11:40] prudhvi: @aegis3121: Hi, now the error is gone
[03:12:16] prudhvi: @aegis3121: and it is now popping up another error, sphinx not found in your system
[03:13:03] prudhvi: you need to configure bin_path,search_binary_name,index_binary_name
[03:13:09] prudhvi: please guide
[03:16:33] aegis3121: honestly no idea. That's a plugin/engine/gem/addon of some kind with which I'm not familiar, not part of Rails standard or any library I've used or have seen.

[03:21:05] prudhvi: The error is also saying that: can't connect to local mysql server

All working fine. ok, now i have a page for show A at :id, with all B nested with A. Ok... i create a jquery function linked to a button, then this function open a dialogbox with list of all B elements (without A linked ones), with a checkbox for each one inside a table rows. Then, i can select
[03:43:28] jeromelanteri: elements (rows). when i push the "OK3 button of dialogbox, i would like to add these elements selected to the current list of nested B elements of A. I do a jquery function for catch id of elements selected (works fine), then i do an ajax call post for list (array) of B elements ids, with :id of A... ok, then i create a method on A::controller named "add_B" or "add_Bs" (for list), then find a variable for params
[03:43:29] jeromelanteri: id... ok, but now, how to just add them to A nested elements ?

[04:01:55] jeromelanteri: so my page has no form edition style, this is a "show" method page and i just search for a way to dynamically add nested elements from a list of these full elements (has said, add pictures to an album without edit all the album... dynamically)
[04:02:42] kgrz: has joined #RubyOnRails
[04:03:22] jeromelanteri: that is why a button linked with jQuery function open a dialog box for show full ist of pictures (a slideshow linked with a table in the design, with checkbox on each row/picture for selection to add).
[04:04:10] jeromelanteri: then from there (that is my question) i need to be able to add the list of pictures selected (so... a list of id inside an array in params) to the Album from a defined method on controller.
[04:05:07] jeromelanteri: Just searching someone able to know wich rails method to use for add this ids list of element to be nested with the Album. do you know that ?

[04:08:49] jeromelanteri: something like: @picture = Pictures.find(params[:id])
[04:09:18] jeromelanteri: @no... @album = Album.find(params[:id])
[04:10:09] jeromelanteri: then, @pictures = Pictures.find(params[:pictures_ids]) (supposed that pictures_ids is an array... nt sure the syntax is correct)

[05:26:36] jeromelanteri: but it is not "nex" elements, elements exist allready iun the database... they have just to be linked with Travail.find(params[:id])
[05:26:55] jeromelanteri: not new... new
[05:28:04] jeromelanteri: (again): it is not a "NEW" element, but an allready exist element in the database, just need to link it to Travail.find(params[:id]) element. from the controller then...
[05:29:47] jeromelanteri: i'm out of the usuall context of view form... then i need to do by controiller what a controller has to be able to do in a MVC design pattern structure. I think it should not be so complixate, but i don't know and never read how to do this easy.
[05:31:54] jeromelanteri: (i think it should not be so complicate... but maybe with framework Rails, it is so complicate to goes out of the CoC just by goes out of a edit page form for add a linked/nested element... is it ?...)

[05:47:31] dgncn: has joined #RubyOnRails
[05:47:32] jeromelanteri: answer is NO, rails can not do that this way, because there is no model for table Travails_Photos...
[05:50:42] roamingdog: has joined #RubyOnRails
[05:56:17] jeromelanteri: an other solution, maybe, but also mouch more complicate, should be to call a render template in the dialog-box (that i do allready) with a part form for check_box of each row of Photo... then have a submit button instead of a jQuery dialog-button, just for call with remote tru (ajax call) a method to the controller for the controller... but again, how to tell rails to just add the selected (by checkbox) elements of

[10:41:21] jeromelanteri: Album model as_and_belong_to_many :photos , Photo has_and_belongs_to_many Album (and together have nested_authorized_attributes mechanism).. then, there is an intermediate table named Albums_Photos (no model need by Rails) whith 2 columns foreign keys: album_id and photo_id. Then, with rails4, from a show view of Album (on :id params), i have list of photos nested. But i want to add some existing photos (who are
[10:41:21] jeromelanteri: inisde the table Photos) from the exhaustive list and selected by a check-box, and not create some new nested_fiels (that is totally different, hope you well understand the idea for be able to help).
[10:42:14] roelof: oke, first problem : when I do rails s -p $PORT -b $IP in the right directory I see this as output : Usage: rails new APP_PATH [options]
[10:42:46] universa1: roelof: you did every step that is listed there?
[10:43:00] roelof: I cloned the repo, cd to the right directory and did bundle install and then rails s

[10:43:08] sevenseacat: dont think so
[10:43:24] universa1: read the readme.
[10:43:25] roelof: universa1: nope according to this : I committed the vendor files to this repo so you may skip step 3 and 4
[10:43:39] roelof: I skipped step 3 and 4

[10:43:40] universa1: so you did 1,2,3,5,6 and 7?
[10:43:43] sevenseacat: and a few others
[10:44:18] roelof: I did them all except 3 and 4
[10:44:18] sevenseacat: so what directory are you in?
[10:44:27] universa1: so do 6 and 7 again and show the output of the terminal in a gist.
[10:45:03] jeromelanteri: the idea is that, from this template generate nside the dialog-box, i have the list of all Photos with checkbox for each for select which one to add to the album or not... then push Ok, button of dialog box for link Photos to Album and refresh the view. At this point, i have the nested elements linked well, the show page with all list of nested photos, the edit page works with natural CoC way by form (because of edit
[10:45:03] jeromelanteri: page...), the dilog box open by jquery call, and the template list the entries in a table with checkbox... but how to add selected photos to Album ?
[10:45:40] universa1: jeromelanteri: for habtm there is association_ids attribute... you can add the ids there iirc
[10:46:10] roelof: oke, somehow step 6 did not what it suppose to do
[10:46:43] jeromelanteri: universal, this is a method call from controiller on Album.photos ?
[10:46:56] universa1: roelof: works for me.

[10:53:27] jeromelanteri: universa1, an other one question, i'm not sure to well understand how i'm supposed to use it (from what i read on the linked official API). from controller side, i create a function (or method) for reiceipt the ajax call with params (so, the :id of the album to find, and an array with ids list of linked nested photos to add. So... am i supposed to do @album.photo_ids = (the variable contain the list of ids to add),
[10:53:27] jeromelanteri: or (variable contain the full list of all ids nested with) ?
[10:54:05] startupality: has joined #RubyOnRails
[10:54:19] jeromelanteri: second solution would be the ids to add include the allready existed ids
[10:54:21] universa1: jeromelanteri: you most likely don't want to drop the old ones, so: @album.photo_ids = @album.photo_ids + new_ids
[10:55:01] jeromelanteri: universa1, ok fine, your answer is clear for me.thank you again.
[10:57:17] k3rn31: has joined #RubyOnRails
[11:00:45] jeromelanteri: universal intended that new_ids could be directly come from params[:photos_ids] (for example) ? like @album += params[:photo_ids]
[11:01:01] captproton: has joined #RubyOnRails
[11:01:20] jeromelanteri: no @album.photo_ids += params[photo_ids]
[11:01:38] universa1: you want the latter
[11:02:32] jeromelanteri: or @photos = Photos.find(params[:photo_ids]) and and @album.photo_ids<< @photo (would works as well if i well understand the API)
[11:02:45] jeromelanteri: fine, i'm happy
[11:02:57] universa1: jeromelanteri: yeah, that would also work
[11:03:25] jeromelanteri: perfect, my IDE doesn't recognize the completion for this method...
[11:03:26] universa1: but create an unecessary database query and objects instantiation
[11:03:48] jeromelanteri: so directly pass the ids is the best way to go nice.
[11:04:12] jeromelanteri: perfect, you save my life this day.
[11:04:16] universa1: if you set up foreign keys, and uniqueness flag + unique index you should be fine
[11:04:49] jeromelanteri: that's the easy way i was searching for all the holly day....

[16:55:17] jhass: first(2) returns an array of two records
[16:55:23] jhass: not the second record
[16:56:10] alfiemax: acovrig, that's because `name` is not an attribute, it's a method defined in your model
[16:56:53] alfiemax: which can be called on a object of your model which is `User.first`
[16:57:32] acovrig: alfiemax, yes, I can call User.first.name, but can I include the name method in User.all ?
[16:58:03] acovrig: alfiemax, how?
[16:58:52] alfiemax: you have to write your own `as_json` method in your model and add that to it
[16:59:58] alfiemax: i.e you'll have to overide the default rails as_json method

[23:30:35] deadhound: does ruby replace PHP when using Rails? or would you still need to use PHP in certain situations or is that apples and oranges?
[23:34:46] Radar: deadhound: PHP and Ruby are two different languages. Best advice is to not mix them at all.
[23:35:43] marchelzo: deadhound: nothing wrong with mixing them
[23:35:48] marchelzo: they're just programming languages
[23:35:53] marchelzo: you write programs with them
[23:36:12] marchelzo: if you want to write your web application in ruby using rails, then it can replace PHP if you'd like it to
[23:37:39] deadhound: well it is a rails web app and there's a server script i need to write - easiest way would be to write that in ruby right?
[23:37:49] deadhound: not to try to get php working in the rails app
[23:38:28] deadhound: i understand i can mix them but if i don't need to - if ruby has similar function to $_POST for example - then i could use ruby
[23:39:03] adam12: Normally you would use something on top of Ruby.
[23:39:09] adam12: PHP was built for the web by default. Ruby wasn't.
[23:39:11] marchelzo: you can certainly access post parameters in a rails app
[23:39:24] marchelzo: you can write the script in any language you like
[23:39:32] adam12: It could be as simple as Rack, or Sinatra, Grape, Rails, Hanami, etc.
[23:39:45] marchelzo: but the $_POST superglobal in PHP is filled in by fastcgi, which is fed information by the httpd
[23:40:02] marchelzo: so if you write a php script and run it from within your ruby app, $_POST will be empty
[23:40:44] deadhound: this is what i am building within rails (it will become a larger application) http://code.tutsplus.com/tutorials/building-a-5-star-rating-system-with-jquery-ajax-and-php--net-11541

[23:44:05] marchelzo: i don't use rails, so hopefully someone will correct me if this is wrong, but in rails, you'd have a model for a movie, and each movie would have a rating
[23:44:27] marchelzo: and you'd use a database with ActiveRecord to interact with the movie ratings
[23:44:46] arathald: so I seem to have landed myself a RoR gig
[23:44:50] deadhound: OK that makes sense
[23:45:01] marchelzo: in the tutorial it looks like they're serializing the ratings and storing them on the disk
[23:45:43] marchelzo: you /could/ do that in your app, but it's not "the rails way"
[23:46:07] deadhound: OK I will have to look deeper into that - would doing that ultimately resolve the use of PHP in this tutorial?
[23:46:25] deadhound: or that's just the correct way to do it in the first place and i would still have this issue?
[23:46:37] deadhound: retrieving the aggregate movie ratings
[23:46:53] deadhound: because the model would store that data in the database and retrieve it - correct?
[23:47:18] deadhound: ah OK so I will look into modifying it into that way thanks
[23:48:35] deadhound: I'm working through Michael Hartl's Rails Tutorial while building something I actually want haha so there's a lot of adjustments to be made - but hey, that's how you get better, right?

[23:52:46] deadhound: I have another basic question about application.html.erb vs index.html.erb
[23:53:16] deadhound: Should your html be in index or application? right now i have both files with application overriding stuff like title that aren't in index. is this correct?
[23:53:46] deadhound: the dir structure is app/views/layouts/application.html.erb and app/views/main/index.html.erb
