[11:14:51] aldnav: Good day everyone. I'm kind of new to Ruby and I am stuck reading gitlabhq's code. I wonder where is this `users` defined from?
[11:14:57] aldnav: http://putco.de/NjQ0NQ.ruby
[11:15:47] aldnav: Your response is much appreciated. Helping a noob like me.
[11:15:59] tbuehlmann_: aldnav: find out where all_references is defined and check what object the method returns. this object responds to the #users method

[11:35:17] kaiks: hi, i have a decimal(8,2) field called price, and I want to disallow assigning values like 12.345 (i.e. >2 decimal places). The "cast" seems to happen implicitly though. Is there any way I can disable the implicit rounding without overriding the setter method?

[11:48:22] kaiks: just run "bundle install" and you'll probably be fine
[11:49:15] aldnav: tbuehlmann_: thanks man
[11:49:42] berenhap: I dont't want the development and test gems in my prod environment, or is there no other way?
[11:49:52] tbuehlmann_: aldnav: you're welcome

[11:53:43] berenhap: kaiks: The command I run is "RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rake db:migrate"
[11:54:25] kaiks: and it still says that you need to install byebug? you should probably move byebug in the gemfile to test section then
[11:56:15] berenhap: I have this line in my dockerfile for the bundle install: "RUN bundle install --without mysql test development"
[11:56:25] berenhap: The byebug is in the test, development section

[12:06:51] naftilos76: Hi, i am facing a problem with my project. I have backgrounds (controller) which has_many backgrounds and belongs_to background . This worked fine until i had the need for a background to belong to one or more backgrounds. Can a join table do the job? I mean, there should be 2 columns of this_id and that_id and as you can understand both will be background_id which is impossible. Is there another way to accomplish this?

[13:57:59] oded: Tried with multiple JS frameworks including actioncable-js (I'm on AngularJS)
[13:59:57] oded: On all of them I see that if I reuse the consumer, unsubscribing and quickly subscribing only shows the unsubscribe event in Rails logs (tried with async and redis)
[14:01:14] oded: When I switch page again which causes another unsubscribe, I see a null reference error inside rails (because it wasn't subscribed), and the following subscribe works
[14:01:47] oded: (Every AngularJS page switch I unsubscribe when old view gets destroyed and subscribe from new view)

[14:57:20] mordof: question about developer environments: has anyone here ever worked with a development environment that is ENTIRELY located somewhere like AWS - and then used sshfs, or some form of network drive to make the files available locally to work with your editor?
[14:57:54] mordof: i'm wondering about options for putting all of the running processes into a remote machine, so the dev machines i have don't have to do so much processing
[14:58:13] mordof: at this point, the thought is *without* a GUI on the remote server
[14:58:34] naftilos76: Hi, i am facing a problem with my project. I have backgrounds (controller) which has_many backgrounds and belongs_to background . [15:12:20] jhfisc: has joined #RubyOnRails
[15:18:41] fryguy: mordof: i've done that in the past, I just ran my programming environment on the server as well though. sshfs is a pretty poor choice, especially for directory traversal stuff, at least it was last time I did htis
[15:22:26] mordof: fryguy: so you did things like vim - or an actual gui on the server?
[15:22:47] mordof: fryguy: are there any better alternatives for remote file system that oyu know of?
[15:23:07] mordof: nevermind - that last question is kind of off-topic here... this whole thing is a stretch
[15:23:49] lupine: I smell developing on production :3
[15:23:58] fryguy: mordof: vim
[15:24:16] fryguy: mordof: depending on network latency, nfs might also be reasonable
[15:24:29] mordof: lupine: nope, not at all
[15:24:54] mordof: lupine: we just have crappy desktops that we're working on - and work doesn't seem to care about the money we spend on aws... but they don'tw ant to shell out for good computers, lol
[15:25:15] jhfisc: has joined #RubyOnRails
[15:25:16] mordof: so if i optimize our production environment a bit, i can provision good vm's to push most of our development needs up to
[15:25:20] lupine: this is my sceptical face. you're welcome ^^
[15:26:51] mordof: fryguy: our office latency can be kind of trash at times... that's probably gonna cause problems for most file system situations i guess

[15:30:09] fryguy: mordof: you run vim on the server, not locally
[15:30:35] mordof: fryguy: indeed - but with latency spikes that's just not gonna be a good experience

[20:21:01] jahrichie: Looking for some guidance. I'm building a normalizing app for our data warehouse. It takes various dbs, csvs, etc and flattens them together. Some of our vendors, like our email provider will have ever changing attributes. I'm trying to write it so the columns are created on the fly every night when the tasks runs. I can't store anything as serialized json, I need everything flat in a column for our front end data readers.
