[00:50:12] amperry: just for experiment's sake, I tried to copy my Rails 4 code into a Rails 5 test app. I can't pull localhost:3000 up because I have a '<%= javascript_include_tag "jquery.tokeninput" %>' call. I'm getting the error "Sprockets::Rails::Helper::AssetNotPrecompiled in Devise::Sessions#new". The instructions say to 'Add `Rails.application.config.assets.precompile += %w( jquery.tokeninput.js )` to `config/initializers/assets.rb` and restart
[00:50:12] amperry: your server', but that doesn't help.

I was wondering if there is a means to get the gitaly to install the file/dependency. Should I run something like bundle install ?I'm not sure if this is a rails thing or a ruby thing and am happy to go to another channel if I'm in the wrong place.

[08:20:52] carel: I get the feeling calling bundle add rdoc whould do the trick.

[13:06:53] catphish: i'd like to moan about something, unfortunately i'm not going to fix it myself, i just want to complain a bit - the detection of a remote user's ip address, this is awful, there are 2 mechanisms that achieve the same thing, yet often yield different results, it's hard to configure
[13:07:35] catphish: i'd really appreciate it if someone could simply remove this duplicate functionality from rails, and instead extend the existing rack functionality, and provide an easy configuration mechanism for it

[13:44:25] mikecmpbll: is it in how they handle local proxies or something?
[13:44:47] catphish: mikecmpbll: yes "trusted proxies" is where it gets messy
[13:44:52] mikecmpbll: also; "that achieve the same thing, yet often yield different results:" is oxymoronic..
[13:45:19] catphish: that's true, perhaps i should have said "try to achieve the same thing" :)
[13:45:58] mikecmpbll: i think last time i looked into it, the same enhancements had been added to both implementations at different times
[13:46:05] mikecmpbll: so it was pretty weird, i agree.\
[13:46:14] mikecmpbll: (and implemented differently, i would imagine)
[13:47:22] catphish: that's the problem, and they're configured in different (and largely poorly documented) ways
[13:48:13] catphish: and examples often use #request_ip and #ip interchangeably, even though they can produce different results once trusted proxies are configured

[18:00:41] mikecmpbll: has joined #RubyOnRails

[18:01:19] fryguy: once the user has the secure cookie, it's out of your control

[21:01:50] amperry: when you run bin/rails test, is it assumed that we're using the 'test' database, or do you need to do something like 'bin/rails test RAILS_ENV=test'?
[21:03:18] Iarfen: desperek: why you don't like them?
[21:04:01] desperek: Iarfen, if you ask about inapp application - i never needed them; if asking about creating websites - its better to do it by hand
[21:04:20] Iarfen: desperek: what's an inapp application?
[21:04:45] Iarfen: desperek: it's better to do a WYSIWYG editor by hand you say?
[21:04:51] desperek: Iarfen, i mean, if i would make app, for example a blogging app, with fancy posts, then i maybe would use wysiwyg editor for users
[21:04:56] baweaver: amperry: you could always check what the Rails env is inside of it to check yourself
[21:05:38] Iarfen: desperek: well, ok. I'm needing it for my mail box then I'll use it
[21:05:41] amperry: baweaver: is this check from the command line? And is there a default?
[21:05:44] desperek: thats not really a rails question to be honest Iarfen
[21:05:44] baweaver: WYSIWIG is horrible at taking layout and stylistic choices into account
[21:06:04] Iarfen: well, ok, I've care asking next time
[21:06:08] baweaver: amperry: this is something you could look up yourself in the Rails testing guide
[21:06:41] baweaver: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/testing.html
[21:06:57] baweaver: reading the documentation will save you a lot of time and effort.

[21:09:11] Iarfen: if I have a A_controller.rb file inside controllers and a A.sass file inside stylesheets, A.sass should be loaded automatically?
[21:09:15] Iarfen: cause it isn't T__T
[21:09:45] baweaver: what are the actual names?
[21:09:53] baweaver: and are you sure you got the pluralization right?
[21:10:19] amperry: baweaver: I sometimes look at that site, but for some reason I find it hard to make heads or tails of it. But I'm also thinking of this: https://github.com/rails/rails/issues/26731
[21:10:25] baweaver: try putting a particularly obnoxious and obvious rule in that sass like `* { color: red; }`
[21:10:52] desperek: and refresh cache*

[21:12:06] baweaver: amperry: that's the core of the documentation and knowledge on Rails, and where we'd frequently point you to find more information
[21:12:58] baweaver: and it appears that these issues are fixed in newer versions of 5.x
[21:16:05] Iarfen: baweaver: I've tried but it doesn't gets loaded
[21:16:35] baweaver: "<baweaver> what are the actual names?"
[21:16:48] Iarfen: contact_controller.rb and contact.sass
[21:17:42] baweaver: and others work?
[21:18:58] baweaver: do you have any errors in the console?
[21:19:45] Iarfen: baweaver: I don't have errors in the console, the home works
[21:20:01] Iarfen: maybe I need a folder, symetrical to the structure of .erb files?

[22:40:59] Radar: GOOD MORNING
[22:41:44] funkytwig: Hi, been trying to build a mailer. The turorial I was using has - redirect_to messages_new_url, notice: "Message received" - but I get an error - undefined local variable or method `messages_new_url'
[22:42:32] funkytwig: The tutorial does not mention this method anyware so I thout it was a OOTB one. Any ideas?
[22:43:00] funkytwig: Radar, GOOD EVENING :-)
[22:43:15] baweaver: Probably a missing route
[22:43:46] baweaver: If you run `rake routes` you'll see the paths on the far right hand side
[22:48:46] funkytwig: The turorial has - get 'contact-me', to: 'messages#new', as: 'new_message' - and says -This creates a route named new_message_url - is this wrong. Will have a look at what this actualy created.
[22:49:36] Radar: funkytwig: listen to baweaver for he is wise.

[22:54:56] meesles: Then your route declaration is incorrect. Paste it into a website so we can look
[22:55:03] meesles: The routes file
[22:55:07] meesles: Don't paste it in chat pls
[22:55:10] Radar: funkytwig: gist what `rake routes` shows.
[22:55:12] helpa: Clearly explain what is happening and create a Gist (http://gist.github.com), (formatted neatly please: http://bit.ly/1q75oia) of the code that is causing the problem you are encountering, as well as any useful output like stacktraces.
[22:55:15] funkytwig: I mean I know the route is missing, just cant figure what is it suposed to poing to
[22:55:28] Radar: less qq more pew pew (read: gist gist)
[23:03:25] Radar: funkytwig: hey how long does it take your app to run rake routes out of curiosity?
[23:04:56] fryguy: funkytwig: why in one place do you say "messages_new_url" and in another place you say "new_message_url"
[23:05:17] Radar: ^ also wondering this
