[07:05:25] dminuoso: Disavowed: Now what exactly is your problem with that?
[07:06:27] Disavowed: dminuoso: Ah, sorry, should have included the trace. I'm actually getting a syntax error: syntax error, unexpected tLABEL, expecting '}' ...tml { redirect_to(@deal) flash: { success: 'Deal was success... ... ^~~~~~
[07:07:28] dminuoso: Disavowed: Check your call to redirect_to
[07:07:41] dminuoso: Disavowed: You used explicit parens, and then there's some magical comma..
[07:08:33] dminuoso: Disavowed: Note that this is not a nested "map". Firstly the terminology is "Hash" in ruby, secondly the outer {} is admittedly confusingly a block and not a Hash.
[07:08:48] dminuoso: Which probably leads you to the confusion.
[07:08:56] Disavowed: Oh ouch. Maybe time to stop for the evening. Or at least install rubocop
[07:09:05] Disavowed: I'm so sorry for such a dumb question
[07:09:14] dminuoso: i.e. you could have written format.html do; ...; end
[07:09:19] Disavowed: Oh of course it's a block
[07:09:21] dminuoso: Don't worry, it wasn't a dumb question. :-)
[07:09:23] Disavowed: How did I miss that?!
[07:09:30] Disavowed: dminuoso: You're very charitable
[07:09:34] Disavowed: Thank you so much for that
[07:09:55] Disavowed: So wrt the error message, it's trying to say that I'm not closing my block properly?
[07:10:15] dminuoso: Let me rewrite into a simpler form to demonstrate what its complaining about.
[07:10:39] dminuoso: Disavowed: First your mentioned error does not line up with your code, so thats kind of annoying.
[07:10:47] Disavowed: If you don't mind. I feel like I'd learn a lot.
[07:10:55] dminuoso: syntax error, unexpected tLABEL, expecting '}' ...tml { redirect_to(@deal) flash: { success: 'Deal was ....
[07:11:02] dminuoso: format.html { redirect_to(@deal), flash: { success: 'Deal was successfully created.' } }
[07:11:09] dminuoso: See the difference? One has a comma, the other doesn't.
[07:11:15] dminuoso: So please gist the code that causes the error message.
[07:11:39] Disavowed: dminuoso: I was going to say I can reproduce, hit undo twice, and you're quite correct - completely different error
[07:11:59] Disavowed: How embarrassing. I'm so sorry.
[07:12:11] dminuoso: Disavowed: Either way, basically you are doing something like this: f(a), {b:1}
[07:12:16] dminuoso: Disavowed: Ruby doesn't know what that means.
[07:13:06] Disavowed: No of course. That makes complete sense.
[07:13:07] dminuoso: In your case you did: f(a) b: 1
[07:13:21] dminuoso: Disavowed: So the stack trace you mentioned complains about an unexected tLABEL, namely "b:"
[07:13:26] Disavowed: I've ditched my parens - I only brought them in to eliminate bugs. Maybe I should look before I leap!
[07:13:46] dminuoso: Disavowed: The parser simply doesnt know what to do with that tLABEL in that spot, so it just bails.
[07:14:18] Disavowed: A tokeniser error I'm guessing
[07:14:25] dminuoso: Disavowed: No a parser error.
[07:14:27] Disavowed: Which makes complete sense
[07:14:45] Disavowed: oh so it's already tokenised, and then can't parse? tLABEL is a token?
[07:14:55] Disavowed: OK with you!
[07:15:33] Disavowed: Thank you so much for the patient tutelage. You've essentially made a typo really interesting. I don't think I'll make that mistake again!
[07:18:20] dionysus69: has joined #RubyOnRails
[07:22:40] dminuoso: Disavowed: You can see that its a syntax error based on the fact that it says "SyntaxError", which always means its a parser error.

[08:32:42] nso95: kapil___: if you have a rails question, ask here
[08:33:33] Disavowed: Does Rails guarantee atomicity? If I try to modify the same resource via two different requests, what happens?
[08:34:01] Disavowed: I know Django cakes its pants unless you set ATOMIC_REQUESTS to True, but that hammers its throughput
[08:39:23] dminuoso: Disavowed: Rails doesn't guarantee "atomicity", but it uses transactions.
[08:39:34] dminuoso: Disavowed: So any "guarantees" about ACID come from your database (or not)
[08:40:54] dminuoso: Disavowed: However. Rails has locking strategies, check out optimistic locking: http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/Locking/Optimistic.html
[08:41:51] dminuoso: In conjunction with pessimistic row level locks, it gives you a lot of options to deal with concurrency.
[08:43:51] Disavowed: This ameliorates the exact situation I was outlining; I'm impressed! What's the performance hit?
[08:44:41] Disavowed: dminuoso: (btw I notice you're pretty active in #haskell - I'm slowly learning it. You don't have a web framework recommendation do you?)
[08:44:56] dminuoso: Disavowed: Just started learning a while ago, Yesod is on my roadmap
[08:47:55] Disavowed: dminuoso: You probably already know but there's a free book: https://www.yesodweb.com/book
[08:48:18] Disavowed: I gather it's pretty complex for a beginner so I've been steered away from it. I've not found a good one yet though
[08:48:49] Disavowed: There's something called Scotty which is akin to a statyically typed Sinatra, but I didn't get on particularly well with it
[08:51:55] Disavowed: dminuoso: Also if you don't mind my asking: what are you using to learn Haskell? I've found a real gap in the market for solid Haskell resources (although naturally, I could be doing it wrong!)
[08:51:57] mtkd: has joined #RubyOnRails
[08:52:39] dminuoso: Disavowed: Are you looking for an inspiration for something to learn from?
[08:53:00] dminuoso: Disavowed: If that's the case, please don't ask me and ask in #haskell directly. They are more qualified to give recommendations.
[08:53:37] dminuoso: I use RWH and the Haskell Report.
[08:56:33] Disavowed: More just correlating information, but yes I should check with them. RWH has been recommended to me by someone very smart. Haskell Report is new to me, so thank you for that.
[08:57:36] dminuoso: Disavowed: Well the Haskell 2010 Report is not exactly a learning resource.. its simply the most accurate thing to tell you things about Haskell..
[08:57:43] dminuoso: Because its the current Haskell standard itself. :-)

[16:24:16] mauro1254: Hi folks, is there an easy way (maybe through a gem) to sync a DB table with REST Web Api?
[16:24:37] mauro1254: This gem should be able to create/update records and also let me map fields...
[16:28:13] cpruitt: mauro1254: I don't know of any gem that would address sync like that. Are you just trying to pull records down & create update the table or is it bi-directional (i.e. you want to post to the API)?
[16:29:01] mauro1254: I don't want to POST, just want to pull data
[16:30:24] cpruitt: mauro1254: Well then, in theory, it' shouldn't be all that complex. Is the problem more complex than just fetching data & updating? Like, is the data extremely complicated or are you trying to abstract multiple unrelated sources or something?
[16:31:28] cpruitt: Or are you looking for a gem because you don't feel comfortable rolling your own solution? (I don't know your experience level and there's no harm in being at a point on a learning curve where you're not comfortable yet).
[16:31:35] mauro1254: cpruitt It is not complicated, but I have to do it in several apps
[16:32:39] cpruitt: mauro1254: Well if it's duplicate code from the same source to the same table, I think you're best bet is to create your own gem to specifically address that particular sync situation.
[16:34:19] cpruitt: I mean, there might be something out there that says "given source REMOTE, pull data, map @remote_x.attr_a to @local_y.attr_x" but i'm not familiar with anything like that. There would be a lot of edge cases for a gem to tackle.

[20:44:03] marvinTD: Hello! I'm getting a strange error when mocking a Java static method using rails/rspec/jruby that only seems to happen in a rails project. But I have no idea why it would be related to rails at all. Posted more details here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/48289303/rspec-stubbing-java-static-method-argumenterror

[21:07:57] istrasci: I have several models that I use across multiple Rails projects. I would like to extract these somehow to reuse them efficiently instead of copying the code to each project. Does this lend itself to creating a Rails Engine, or just a "regular" gem? I only need models and migrations; don't need controllers or views for them.

[22:39:56] neredsenvy: Is there a way to change the layout in a controller action ? Just doing self.layout does not work.
[22:40:01] Radar: GOOD MORNING
[22:40:10] Radar: neredsenvy: render :new, layout: "bar" iirc
[22:40:49] neredsenvy: Odd I have `render showhelp, layout: 'fluid'`
[22:43:11] Radar: And what does the Rails logs show for that action? rendering template showhelp with layout... ???
[22:48:13] Radar: neredsenvy: can you gist the log please?
[22:49:37] neredsenvy: Radar: I'm a bit rusty with rails/ruby if I have a help_controller.rb and views/help/showhelp.html.haml and I have def showhelp method in help controller I dod not need to declare render.
[22:49:56] Radar: neredsenvy: You do if you want to use a different layout for that action
[22:50:02] Radar: [09:39:56] <neredsenvy> Is there a way to change the layout in a controller action ? Just doing self.layout does not work.
[22:50:13] Radar: which, judging by your question, it sounds like just what you want to do
[22:50:39] Radar: [09:48:13] <Radar> neredsenvy: can you gist the log please?
[22:50:45] neredsenvy: currently method has no render
[22:51:07] Radar: yes, and I'm telling you that if you want to render a different layout just for that one method you will need to call render explicitly.
[22:51:20] Radar: Calling it explicitly will let you set a custom layout for that action
[22:51:48] Radar: I just tried `render :index, layout: "bar"` in an app that I have here and it worked fine.
