[02:35:54] timdotrb: I have some rails logger lines in an Active Job that I have setup. I see the job process in my logs, but nothing is being output that I'm trying to log
[02:36:08] timdotrb: Is there something you need to include or do to get logging output in a rails job?

[08:46:19] elsurudo: So the rails date/time view helpers generate fields that end in “(1i)”, “(2i)” etc. to break apart the different parts of the date, and then assign them all in unison to oen date object… is there a generalized pattern for this? I have a similar need, but my time is broken down into hr, min, and am/pm parts, so the standard ones aren’t cutting it for me. I created my own attr accessors and am setting the date in a before_vali
[08:46:19] elsurudo: callback, but the problem is that my new accessors don’t trigger the “dirty” state for the object, so it’s not actually updated unless I update some other (regular) attribute as part of my update. Ideas?

[16:38:25] Andr3as: lemme update the gist with the stacktrace
[16:38:39] tbuehlmann: ah, I see. well, you're in a class method so #send will try to find a class method. import_tradovate is an instance method however

[18:11:47] iamvery: i'm getting some mixed signals from others success upgrading, however (just got a comment on github), so it's possible there's some specific problem with this app. just not seeing it :/

[18:13:23] tbuehlmann: iamvery: do you have a stacktrace?
[18:13:28] iamvery: right, unfortunately that doesn't appear to be working in this case. if that's how you expect it to work, then it may be a problem on our side. thank you again for talking me through it
[18:14:16] dminuoso: timdotrb_: You then dont have the courtesy to gist code that matches the stacktraces.
[18:14:17] timdotrb_: dminuoso: flyer_campaign_job.rb 34 -> flyer_mailer.rb 8 -> send_flyer.html.erb 12
[18:14:21] iamvery: tbuehlmann: yes, here you go https://gist.github.com/iamvery/1ee6a80c04151d36f713ca798bed9c62 (FYI i'm about to have to step away)
[18:14:31] dminuoso: timdotrb_: Stop!
[18:14:36] iamvery: (so my response will be delayed)
[18:14:57] dminuoso: timdotrb_: I want you to `git checkout -b testcase`, and start deleting code that is completely irrelevant to your problem
[18:15:13] dminuoso: Surely you dont need a 70 line of code job to reproduce your problem.
[18:15:30] dminuoso: And surely you dont need <html><head>... to reproduce your problem.
[18:15:59] dminuoso: timdotrb_: Make your goal to reduce it to the absolute bare minimum, using no more methods/functions/code/markup than necessary to demonstrate your problem.
[18:16:36] tbuehlmann: iamvery: sure. the error comes from https://github.com/rails/rails/blob/v5.2.0/railties/lib/rails/application.rb#L585 so maybe put a debugger right before that line and have a look around
[18:17:56] tbuehlmann: or rather hook into https://github.com/rails/rails/blob/v5.2.0/railties/lib/rails/application.rb#L432 and have a look around _there_

[21:07:52] dminuoso: timdotrb: then you reduced too much. Cut until the behavior stops. Cut in other places until the behavior stops.
[21:08:02] dminuoso: Repeat until you have the bare minimum needed to trigger the problem.
[21:08:09] FrostCandy: I have a nested_form_for with some radio buttons and textboxes, I want to add a checkbox but it doesn't apply to any database field so I cant use :fieldname I want to do something like, f.check_box "My Text", "MyValue"

[21:32:22] arooni: running ubuntu 16.04 with nginx; is the most recommended way to serve a rails app to plugin in passenger phusion?
[21:35:22] FrostCandy: nm figured it out :)
[21:36:30] havenwood: arooni: Sure, that's fine. Why not 17.10 with nginx? :-P
[21:36:59] arooni: havenwood: because i wasted half a day upgrading ubuntu 14.04 => 16.04 for that box ;p
[21:37:17] arooni: how resource intensive is phusion now adays
[21:37:46] havenwood: arooni: that's kinda hard to answer in the abstract
[21:38:18] havenwood: it uses a reasonably small amount of resources - it does its best
[21:38:34] arooni: or serving an app that doesnt get that much traffic; 167 sessions per day
[21:39:12] arooni: each session is < 5 min on average
[21:39:42] havenwood: arooni: I'd think CGI could handle that load just fine.
[21:39:59] arooni: cgi as an alternative to passenger?
[21:40:04] havenwood: Just joking, but sure.
[21:41:01] havenwood: arooni: I'm sure Passenger is more than ample. It can handle quite a load. Benchmark it with a load test.
[21:41:38] havenwood: arooni: It's true you can just use CGI for stuff with such low load - but no need to. I was just joking, but here's a writeup on how to do it: https://www.mikeperham.com/2015/01/05/cgi-rubys-bare-metal/
[21:42:53] arooni: i havent messed with this rails app in ages; me not getting that jokes proves it hahah

[23:48:20] dgsan: Kind of dumb question...
[23:48:21] dgsan: I'm working with someone's JSON API and it has an endpoint that always returns a quoted string. Like literally the entire response body is just something like "abcdefgh1234567" (including the quotes). JSON.parse hates this, JSONLint says it's technically valid JSON.
[23:48:21] dgsan: I can just take the response body and sub out the first and last chars (body[1...-1]) and forget JSON.parse (and probably will), but I'm wondering if I'm missing something here.
[23:48:36] jottr: has joined #RubyOnRails
[23:50:50] mroutis: can you link to a gist with a JSON example, dgsan?
[23:55:23] dgsan: mroutis: It's not really a code question. JSON.parse "\"abcdefg1234567\"" Gives a JSON::ParserError, pasting "abcdefg1234567" into https://jsonlint.com/ gives "Valid JSON." I can work around it, I'm just wondering what I'm missing.
