[00:17:10] CGibsonmm: hello, I am looking to dynamically load in a modal through a js jbuilder that renders a partial, I have the jbuilder working and rendering other things correctly, but when I try to also load in modal in the partial and I click the link to display the modal, I get the fade class, but no data from the modal is displayed.
[00:17:46] CGibsonmm: when I inspect the html the modal shows up but its like the bootstrap js is not calling it
[00:19:56] CGibsonmm: Is it because the bootstrap js looks at the dom only on the original page load? and if so is there any patch to override that?

[07:59:09] djass2: Hello I am using rails 5.2.1 in dev env, when I change my source code, it not taked in account when I refresh my web page. Unless I restart my server...
[07:59:41] lexileo: has joined #RubyOnRails
[07:59:54] djass2: Hello lexileo
[08:03:45] tbuehlmann: djass2: what exactly did you change?
[08:04:19] djass2: I put a big "abort", and nothing change, unless I restart
[08:05:23] lankanmon: has joined #RubyOnRails
[08:05:26] tbuehlmann: so you changed the view?

[08:05:58] djass2: yes tbuehlmann I tried to changed the view
[08:07:52] tbuehlmann: sounds good so far
[08:09:27] djass2: For exemple I added a abort in line 12 of my controller, everything was looking normal : I got a "exit" on my page after refresh
[08:09:47] djass2: BUT when I remove this "abort" on line 12
[08:10:29] djass2: I got that strange screen : https://screenshots.firefox.com/TCr73V7oRIUl6YV7/127.0.0.1 (it telle me that the abort it still here, but it is false !)
[08:11:01] djass2: it tel me that the "abort" is stille here, but it is wrong*

[09:11:40] djass2: (I cut the error)

[09:14:00] tbuehlmann: what? I mean putting DISABLE_SPRING=1 in the beginning of the command
[09:16:03] djass2: still weird
[09:16:22] djass2: I thing to use a older rails version ...
[09:18:09] tbuehlmann: do you still get an error?
[09:18:34] djass2: no, it is good for the starting server
[09:18:50] djass2: but my code source is still not updated
[09:19:48] djass2: when i add a abort or I remove a methode, rails does not see it
[09:20:26] tbuehlmann: just to be sure: do you save the file after chaging it?

[10:24:13] tbuehlmann: 5.2.1 as the Gemfile.lock dictates
[10:24:40] djass2: ok, and do you use sessions with cookies ?
[10:26:13] tbuehlmann: yes, I have the same application you have
[10:26:52] djass2: ok, actually cookie do not persist for me
[10:28:30] tbuehlmann: how do you check?
[10:30:23] djass2: When a user is authenticate, I create a session with the user.id, I check the session doing "p session[:current_user_id]". I can see it store on authentication, but when the redirection is done to the home page, my session is empty
[10:32:06] tbuehlmann: can you gist what you have?
[10:32:28] djass2: yes for sure

[10:50:20] djass2: tbuehlmann, I got "Can't verify CSRF token authenticity." when the login form is submit, perhaps it is because of that ?

[11:00:15] tbuehlmann: yes, it has to do with that, then. when manually calling `protect_from_forgery` without an :with option, the default strategy will be :null_session
[11:00:52] lexileo: has joined #RubyOnRails
[11:00:53] tbuehlmann: basically nullifying the session. if you fix the CSRF problem, you'll fix the session problem

[11:10:06] tbuehlmann: this can be a lot of things. do you submit a form from the same domain? do you use a form helper? have you reloaded the page and tried again?
[11:12:05] djass2: no this this my form : https://gitlab.com/jasmin.bellance/api-test/blob/master/api/app/views/users/login.html.erb
[11:12:22] djass2: I am on the same domain
[11:12:29] djass2: yes I reload the page
[11:20:06] tbuehlmann: I could reproduce it with your app
[11:21:17] djass2: ah, I am not crazy ^^
[11:22:43] djass2: you can edit the code, putting a "abort" to see if rails take your changes in account without restarting the server ?
[11:24:14] tbuehlmann: you might have not read my answer to that:
[11:24:21] tbuehlmann: 104700 <tbuehlmann> what editor do you use for editing the files?
[11:24:21] tbuehlmann: 110037 <tbuehlmann> hm, nope, that's not it. I thought it might be https://github.com/moby/moby/issues/15793, but I can edit files just as expected and the changes will show up in the browser
[11:24:21] tbuehlmann: 110041 <tbuehlmann> djass2: no idea
[11:25:30] djass2: I got "No results matched your search." with your link
[11:26:00] djass2: the link is ok
[11:27:01] djass2: so it is not a docker issue, because, in the container I can see the update with nano
[11:27:29] djass2: so the modification is done, but rails doesn't see it
[11:27:40] tbuehlmann: right, but maybe rails can't register your change because of docker/linux and therefore can't reload the code
[11:29:30] djass2: rails should could get my changes, the container relay it correctly as I could see...
[11:30:09] djass2: I will try to ask rails to show me the change to be sure
[11:30:51] DTZUZO: has joined #RubyOnRails
[11:34:28] djass2: tbuehlmann, my changes it accessible via rails, I could see them doing in rails console ``File.read("/var/www/app/api/app/controllers/users_controller.rb")``
[11:35:17] tbuehlmann: that's not what I meant. rails listens for file changes and reloads on certain file changes. if there's a problem with docker or the image and file changes from outside are not "reported" inside docker, rails won't reload the code
[11:36:51] tbuehlmann: but I found your other problem :)
[11:36:56] tbuehlmann: or rather the solution
[11:36:57] djass2: but, it not the case, the code is really "reported" inside docker
[11:37:48] djass2: (the chain is not break host|docker|rails so)
[11:38:16] tbuehlmann: https://gitlab.com/jasmin.bellance/api-test/blob/2f5164e4e4425686b96a5b3e38b5bdc015a6df1f/api/app/views/layouts/application.html.erb#L10 <-- you need this javascript
[11:41:36] tbuehlmann: to the code reloading issue: can you open a rails console inside docker and run this? https://gist.github.com/tbuehlmann/1041d3302057d540d8e83da328fd8deb
[11:41:52] tbuehlmann: then change a controller, save it and check if there's any output in the rails console
[11:42:08] LambdaSource: has joined #RubyOnRails
[12:03:58] djass2: still the same error tbuehlmann, but I have a new info, whan I edit my html the updates is taked in account, but not when I update a controller or a routes in routes.rb
[12:04:46] tbuehlmann: how does the line with the application javascript thingy look like now? also, did you do the thing with the rails console?
[12:05:22] djass2: the line added a blue charging bar
[12:05:35] djass2: no I didnt do anything
[12:05:40] djass2: I just check my logs
[12:06:18] djass2: I guess this line, is to optimize cache, but there its is not that I kind problem
[12:06:38] tbuehlmann: regarding CSRF: check if the generated html includes "/assets/rails-ujs.self-<timestamp>.js"
[12:07:04] tbuehlmann: is that file referenced in your page?
[12:07:07] djass2: I things I have to tell rails to listen also controllers & cie, not only html file
[12:07:32] djass2: what do you mean by "referenced" ?
[12:07:55] apparition: has joined #RubyOnRails
[12:08:26] tbuehlmann: does it include <script src="/assets/rails-ujs.self-<some-string>.js?body=1" data-turbolinks-track="reload"></script>?
[12:09:04] tbuehlmann: I don't mean the view file, I mean the browser page's source code, just to be sure
[12:09:12] djass2: I do not already manage stuff like javascript
[12:09:15] tbuehlmann: if not, you haven't correctly included the file. how does the like look like now?
[12:09:47] djass2: ok I check it

[12:13:10] tbuehlmann: regarding your reloading issue: have you tried what I suggested?
[12:15:46] djass2: sorry, I am a little lost, which suggestion ? I guess yes
[12:19:06] tbuehlmann: 124128 <tbuehlmann> to the code reloading issue: can you open a rails console inside docker and run this? https://gist.github.com/tbuehlmann/1041d3302057d540d8e83da328fd8deb

[12:19:44] djass2: Not working
[12:20:09] tbuehlmann: "not working" as in there's no output?
[12:23:15] djass2: I have ouput, but the session is still empty, and the changes are not taking in account. But I do not have the issue concerning CSRF => thank you for that :)

[12:41:16] djass2: I edit the controller direct in the container, but nothing, I meant no output from the console, neither in le development.log file
[12:41:29] djass2: yes, no output
[12:41:38] tbuehlmann: okay. what happens when you open bash in docker, change a controller using vim and save? do you get output then?
[12:42:24] djass2: I did it with nano
[12:42:29] djass2: 099tbuehlmann> so, no output?
[12:42:29] djass2: [13:41.11] <djass2> I edit the controller direct in the container, but nothing, I meant no output from the console, neither in le development.log file
[12:44:27] tbuehlmann: really, no idea then. I still assume docker doesn't correctly report the file changes so rails can't know when to reload code, but I can't prove it
[12:44:45] tbuehlmann: so I think it's not a rails issue, but a docker issue
[12:45:09] djass2: ok, and when I use nano it still not work
[12:45:51] djass2: using nano I am in the container Linux
[12:46:07] djass2: it should work
[12:46:18] djass2: with rails I read the modification also
[12:46:49] djass2: I read the file with ruby from the console, and the modification was done
[12:47:14] djass2: so rails got the udpdate, I got the proof
[12:47:41] tbuehlmann: I can't follow
[12:48:50] djass2: You meant I am not clear or ... ?

[12:53:28] djass2: I am supposed to get ouput on changing my controller, right ?
[12:54:51] djass2: I do not have ouput
[12:55:08] LambdaSource: has joined #RubyOnRails
[12:55:24] djass2: so you was thinking that docker do not "relay" the changes ?
[12:57:16] djass2: so, I entered in the container to verify the change it correctly "relay" : it is
[12:58:27] tbuehlmann: it's not about the changes not being made, it's about the "reporting" changes part that might be off
[12:58:32] djass2: I also edit the file, being in the container with nano editor (I could do it with vim), the change was done (There docker is not a stackholder)
[12:59:17] tbuehlmann: but I'm not really an expert in that, I don't know when and how file changes are propagated
[12:59:32] djass2: I also check being in the rails console, with ruby, I display the content of the file, and the file was updated
[12:59:33] tbuehlmann: but I still think it's that and that it's a docker issue
[13:00:04] djass2: ok tbuehlmann
[13:00:14] tbuehlmann: again, I believe you that the changes are made. I just think they are not reported correctly, so rails listening to file changes doesn't get the memo
[13:00:32] tbuehlmann: try this same thing not in docker but on your host system, the result might differ
[13:01:50] GodFather: has joined #RubyOnRails

[13:02:40] djass2: yes I will try it without docker and we will see ;)
[13:03:34] tbuehlmann: I can't explain it, since I don't know how that works exactly in linux
[13:03:44] tbuehlmann: this is just an assumption
[13:05:29] djass2: ok for me that behavior is looking like the server was run in production env
[13:05:52] djass2: I think I miss something in my config env dev
[13:06:06] djass2: we will see so

[14:28:56] djass2: I dont know, the update is observable after reboot puma. So the probleme is puma/rails side
[14:29:33] tbuehlmann: uh? how's it working after restarting puma?
[14:30:18] tbuehlmann: when you restart puma, then change a controller, it reloads the code?
[14:32:55] djass2: It do not reload the code. When I restart puma after change the code, I can observe the modifications. But, if I change the code without restart puma, I can not observe the modifications
[14:34:17] Exuma: has joined #RubyOnRails
[14:35:31] tbuehlmann: that fits with my assumption. when starting rails (or puma) and accessing constants, it loads them from your files. the expected behaviour when files change is that rails "forgets" about loaded constants and reloads them when accessed. as rails is not being notified about file changes, no reloads are happening
[14:36:02] tbuehlmann: it's probably the windows and docker combination, as file changes are not propagated properly
[14:36:07] tbuehlmann: this is not a rails issue
[14:37:40] djass2: And why it still not work when I edit a file directly in linux ? Without passing by Windows
[14:39:45] kapil____: has joined #RubyOnRails
[14:39:45] djass2: inside the container I edit, so without passing by docker, nothing happen also
[14:41:54] djass2: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
[14:42:07] tbuehlmann: it works for me and I'm not on windows
[14:42:23] tbuehlmann: maybe it's windows, maybe the docker version, maybe a combination, how knows
[14:42:25] djass2: are you using my docker-compose file ?
[14:42:29] tbuehlmann: but I'm certain it's not rails
