#RubyOnRails - 30 December 2018

« Back 1 day Forward 1 day »
[00:01:03] coder2000: I think it is still active. 6.0 is coming out soon. There are just a lot of options these days and the ones using rails are the hardcores.
[00:02:18] coder2000: Basecamp and Github aren't going to change their platforms anytime soon.
[00:02:54] dviola: why do you care if it's in the decline or not, do you use things because they are considered hot?
[00:03:09] dviola: or because of hype

[00:25:49] coder2000: I generally pick a framework based on the requirements of the project or what I feel like. I haven't used rails in awhile but pick something from time to time to work on so I keep sharp.

[00:28:43] coder2000: and I wasn't the one who asked the question. :p

[00:37:56] rexmie: If RoR is not popular then it's difficult for new comers like myself to land a job in the future....
[00:38:54] rexmie: I love RoR, it feels very elegant comparing to python or Java imho
[00:51:38] IGnorAND: anyone know how to resolve webpacker image files in .vue files?
[00:52:17] IGnorAND: I came as far as <%= asset_pack_path 'images/main-logo.png' %> but this doesn't work in .vue
[00:54:34] Technodrome: has joined #RubyOnRails
[01:03:25] dviola: RoR popularity should be the least of your worries for getting a job
[01:07:57] rexmie: yah, it's the least of my worries

[16:36:50] bswinnerton: When using rails_ujs, what should the create controller action look like in a case in which model.save == false?
[16:42:13] bswinnerton: Ah, I think I got it. It seems the action can stay the same and you can add error handling logic in the .js.erb file.
[16:42:36] bswinnerton: Would the alternative be using ajax callback statuses?
[16:44:29] sandelius: bswinnerton you could return the validation errors as json or similar
[16:45:09] bswinnerton: that sounds ideal, then I wouldn't have to use this .js.erb file. Would that JSON be passed to the ajax:error callback?
[16:46:35] bswinnerton: Is the only rails-ujs documentation https://guides.rubyonrails.org/working_with_javascript_in_rails.html?
[16:48:04] sandelius: bswinnerton to trigger ajax:error you should be using something like: render json: model.errors.full_messages, status: 422
[16:48:18] EXCHGR: has joined #RubyOnRails
[16:49:25] bswinnerton: sandelius: cool, I'll give that a shot. What would the happy path look like? render json: {}, status: 200?
[16:49:59] sandelius: head 204 or head :no_content if your not responsing with any data
[16:50:09] sandelius: responding*

[17:08:17] bswinnerton: That worked, thanks sandelius
[17:08:32] sandelius: wonderful :)
[17:08:50] bswinnerton: Can I subscribe to the event listeners in https://guides.rubyonrails.org/working_with_javascript_in_rails.html#rails-ujs-event-handlers (ajax:success, ajax:error, etc), on a particular element? Or does it need to be the entire document.body?
[17:10:00] bswinnerton: For example, could I do something like $('form#signup').on('ajax:success')?
[17:10:00] sandelius: nah you be more specific like (jQuery) $(document).on('ajax:error', '#my-element', funcction() { ... })

[17:36:32] sandelius: Hello there catbusters
[17:37:22] catbusters: I've done web development using Flask, Django, and some JS frameworks before
[17:37:34] catbusters: Looking to move to Rails
[17:38:14] catbusters: However there's so much to it that I find it a bit overwhelming
[17:38:18] catbusters: Any recommendations?
[17:38:49] lupine: ignore 95% of it, focus on building something small
[17:38:55] sandelius: catbusters yes, start with Ruby then Rails ;)
[17:40:07] sandelius: catbusters if you're in to books I can recommend these for Ruby https://gist.github.com/baweaver/57a7c8296ca2c03effbd8fac1e7f6b40
[17:40:33] catbusters: I've built a few scripts with Ruby before and didn't find it too difficult
[17:40:55] sandelius: Once you get the "hang" of Ruby, Rails wont be so overwhelming and you'' understand alot more just by looking at the apis
[17:41:29] sandelius: But as lupine said, start small
[17:43:18] catbusters: Actually I've got an existing application I'm looking to convert to rails
[17:43:24] catbusters: Not big on books
[17:50:21] sandelius: catbusters I always set junior developers to go threw https://www.railstutorial.org/ it's free online and is a great intro to rails and tdd
[17:51:25] sandelius: catbusters it's still a book but interactive since you're building an app while reading
[17:57:39] catbusters: I'll check it out
[17:57:59] catbusters: Are there any YouTube channels you might recommend though? Or video course?
