[03:14:24] El3ktra: Hey I am preparing for an upcoming interview for a position that uses Ruby On RAils... any suggestions for how I should prepare?
[03:18:06] El3ktra: wmoxam, yes, but I am self-taught.
[03:18:27] El3ktra: that's good to hear then :)
[03:18:55] El3ktra: I've been doing stuff with codewars, and looking at this page: http://samurails.com/interview/
[03:19:26] El3ktra: I feel decently prepared, but I was wondering if there was anything that I should look at that people would suggest
[03:22:13] El3ktra: he he "splat"
[03:22:22] El3ktra: I am still giggling about the Object method "taint"
[03:22:34] El3ktra: wmoxam, yeah, I go get the feeling that they are going to be asking ruby questions
[03:22:47] El3ktra: it's a phone intervew, then I will get about 45m to work on a programming problem
[03:23:09] El3ktra: have you guys played around on codewars?
[03:24:07] El3ktra: wmoxam, highly recommend: http://www.codewars.com/dashboard
[03:24:26] El3ktra: wmoxam, yeah, that's why I am asking here :P
[03:24:54] El3ktra: yeah, I got a question like that during an interview
[03:25:22] El3ktra: It was an algerba question that had a devide by zero in it, which apparently is covered in nearly every math class nowadays
[03:26:03] El3ktra: the sucky thing is that I really want this job. The last two interviews I didn't get, but they were for jobs that I didn't really feel that I was a good fit for

[00:05:26] El3ktra: Hey, what do you guys recommend for creating sortable tables? (that is, sortable by fields)
[00:10:54] El3ktra: I know that there are a lot of ways to make sortable tables in rubyrails, I am just wondering what you guys have found to be the best solution
[00:15:49] El3ktra: I'm going with WiceGrid unless I hear differently....
[00:25:11] El3ktra: pontiki, yes
[00:25:34] El3ktra: sorry, I didn't make that very clear did I? :P
[00:31:10] El3ktra: pontiki, thanks! I was looking at this: http://wicegrid.herokuapp.com/basics3?grid[order]=title&grid[order_direction]=asc
[00:33:28] El3ktra: yes, looks liek datatables in what I want
[00:33:34] El3ktra: thanks muchly pontiki!!
[00:34:15] El3ktra: Yeah, I don't need that, I am workign with just a few rows
[02:02:44] El3ktra: pontiki, <3 datatables :D
[02:02:46] El3ktra: Thanks again!

[22:00:10] El3ktra: Hi there, does anyone have a resource for doing a search on a M:N side? That is, I have an object Album with many Keywords. I want to select only albums that have a specific keyword (ie keyword id 5)

[05:42:20] El3ktra: nahtnam, you figure it out?
[05:50:19] El3ktra: Well, the answer really lies in whether a user can have more then one token or not.
[05:50:46] El3ktra: If there is always just one token, you can make a 1:1 association in another table, or just add a column if it really is just one string
[05:51:05] El3ktra: But, if there is a chance that a user might have more then one, then you'd need that 1:m relationship

[02:54:47] El3ktra: Good evening, I am trying to add a jqeury file to my ruby rails app. I have the file, it's loaded (verified using a console), however all the listeners that the jquery file sets up are not attached.
[02:55:02] El3ktra: If I copy/paste the code that assigns the listeners, then the application works just fine.
[03:00:59] El3ktra: hm, figured my issue out. Rather then setting up the listerners in the js file, I setup the listeners in a function, then call that function at the bottom of the page. Is that how it is supposed to be done?

[00:51:18] El3ktra: So, I want to show the "many" side of a relationship as a comma-deliminated list. I do this using: movie.keywords.map(&:name).join(",")
[00:52:07] El3ktra: It works well, but I have another object that has a name that I compile in the method file. (The name has a firstname and lastname, and I have a methid that returns a string of the two names combined)
[00:52:35] El3ktra: the problem is that map doesn't work with fields that aren't fields in the database
[00:52:40] El3ktra: sorry if I am not explaining this well
[00:53:34] El3ktra: yes, a rails issue. Is there a better room?
[00:54:07] El3ktra: has joined #RubyOnRails
[00:54:36] El3ktra: and the keywords work great, because I am using a field in the DB
[00:54:50] El3ktra: The problem is that I have another object, "artist", where there are two names (first and last)
[00:55:00] El3ktra: so I have a function in the model that compiles the two names into one
[00:55:05] El3ktra: Aeyrix, yes
[00:55:15] El3ktra: and I want to map on that function
[00:55:34] El3ktra: two names, one string
[00:55:47] El3ktra: Yeah, I dont' think that I can use map
[00:56:40] El3ktra: ok, suppose I have a table movies and a table actor
[00:56:45] El3ktra: I want to show all the actors in a comma list
[00:59:10] El3ktra: Yeah, I dont' think that I can use map
[00:59:40] El3ktra: I am using a loop in the erb file to show each artist name
[01:24:10] El3ktra: sorry I didn't post the liunk, I figure it out
[01:24:14] El3ktra: Artist.all.collect {|u| u.flName}.join ', '
[01:24:32] El3ktra: (flName is a function that returns firstname + " " + lastname)
[01:24:38] El3ktra: thanks for looking at this Aeyrix

2015-01-18

[02:00:05] El3ktra: I added has_many :artists, through => :authors
[02:05:51] El3ktra: Rich many-to-many
[02:06:01] El3ktra: sorry, I call those tables M:N tables
[02:06:10] El3ktra: and rich, meaning that they have additional information
[02:09:25] El3ktra: I am just having a tough time getting it to work... do you have experience setting this up && can you PM me?
[02:09:38] El3ktra: Jayoshi32, are you getting an error?
[07:08:56] El3ktra: because they all have some sort of central repository
[07:09:20] El3ktra: its like I use a spoon to tkae out a jellybean, and you use a fork--- two methods, but we both get a jellybean from the same spot
[07:09:37] El3ktra: ACTION starts to suspect she is thinking too high level
[07:10:06] El3ktra: yes, any database
[07:10:13] El3ktra: and the language that you work in will have a way to talk to it
[07:10:30] El3ktra: I will admit that I haven't done iOS work, but whatever language you work with will have APIs
[07:10:51] El3ktra: and yeah, a repository is generally a database. It can be on your machine, or in the cloud
[07:11:57] El3ktra: sorry, but I am probably one of the few people that can't on here :P
[07:12:17] El3ktra: I have setup everything on boxes that I own. But I know that Amazon is popular...
[07:12:53] El3ktra: can you recommend a cloud platform to host a postgresql database? If such a thing exsists?
[07:13:16] El3ktra: https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/search/results/ref=srh_navgno_search_box?page=1&searchTerms=openlogic+postgresql
[07:14:14] El3ktra: There MUST be a #cloud room or something... or maybe a #postgresql room?
[07:14:23] El3ktra: (if centrx can't help)
[07:16:36] El3ktra: yeah sounds like that is the way to go
[07:17:16] El3ktra: Maybe check out this website: http:://www.cnet.com/news/free-cloud-services-compared/
