[06:40:04] boshhead: I'm trying to find out about Devise and CSRF tokens, it seems to be a CSRF token wouldn't be necessary because the oauth token is sent with the http headers, which another site wouldn't have access to. Or does Devise also check a cookie for this oauth token? In which case you would want a separate CSRF token.
[06:40:53] boshhead: Basically I'm wondering if Devise can fallback to cookie-based authentication rather than header-based. Cuz if it can then I'd want a CSRF token too.

[02:05:56] boshhead: Hi, I'm trying to access secret_key_base but it isn't getting set in development mode. My code is: logger.debug Rails.application.config.secret_key_base --- but this is returning nil
[02:07:35] boshhead: config/secrets.yml seems to be set correctly
[02:08:36] boshhead: (On rails5 btw)
[02:13:55] boshhead: i guess ill just set it manually in environments/development.rb -- that seems to work. i suspect it's a problem cuz I used --api in rails new and it's not loading for that reason?

2016-06-02

[21:04:55] boshhead: Hello, I'm using rails new --api because I'm using rails to generate a JSON API (consumed by Emberjs on the frontend). But I need rails to serve up index.html.erb and it's not doing that... it says "Processing by HomeController#index as HTML" -- ive tried it as index.html and that still doesn't work.
[21:05:20] boshhead: What do I need to do in my controller to render index.html.erb -- or does the --api option mean I cant do that?
[21:09:53] boshhead: how do I add a controller to application_controller.rb? Specifically I want to load ActionView::Layouts
[21:12:19] boshhead: yeah that was the problem, i had to include ActionView::Layouts -- got it solved now, thanks :)
[21:16:56] boshhead: norc: i fixed it. the --api option didnt include ActionView::Layouts, so it couldnt respond with html
[21:17:09] boshhead: i keep needing to add things back in cuz of this --api option :P
[21:18:23] boshhead: yup i read that
[21:20:16] boshhead: norc: by default it doesnt have ActionController::RequestForgeryProtection either, had to add that in. cuz ember can take advantage of the CSRF tokens.
[21:22:50] boshhead: yeah i like the concept, and you can add things back in if you're weird like me and need them :)
[22:19:16] boshhead: hello, if anyone could offer help on this i'd appreciate it: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/37603066/new-project-with-rails-new-api-missing-actiondispatchrequest
[22:22:40] boshhead: tubbo: i did
[22:22:54] boshhead: comparison of String with 0 failed, highlighting the line logger.log "#{request}"
[22:23:13] boshhead: the error was comparison with String 0 failed, and it highlighted that line as the problem

[16:48:07] boshhead: In Rails, if I'm using RSpec to test my views, what is the best way to use xpath selectors to verify parts of my document are there? I'm trying to use the selectors that capybara/rspec provides, but I can't find any documentation for using it that way... is there something else?
[16:52:14] boshhead: In Rails, if I'm using RSpec to test my views, what is the best way to use xpath selectors to verify parts of my document are there? I'm trying to use the selectors that capybara/rspec provides, but I can't find any documentation for using it that way... is there something else?
[16:53:55] boshhead: well, I won't find out what the best practices are for testing views with rspec by looking at the code. I might be able to figure out how to the capybara stuff, but I suspect I'm not supposed to use it for what I'm trying to use it for -- since it's failing all over the place :P
[16:57:59] boshhead: SloggerKhan: yes, i can find documentation on capybara, I just can't find out how to use to test a view only. It wants your spec tests in spec/features it seems, but i want to use the selectors just to test spec/views.
[17:22:39] boshhead: Under spec/spec_helper i have 'require capybara/rspec'. In my view test, within spec/views I use: "expect(rendered).to have_xpath(" successfully, but if I use have_no_xpath I get an undefined method error.
[17:22:58] boshhead: Specifically it says "has_no_xpath" is undefined. Any clues? They should both be defined in the same source file... I'm lost.
[17:24:33] boshhead: Hrmm. I will just use .to_not instead of have_no_xpath :P that works :)

[18:17:37] boshhead: I'm creating a new project with Rails 4.1.0 and ruby 2.1.1 When I generate a scaffold, adding a new item will give me a CSRF authentication token error.
[18:18:05] boshhead: I keep trying to reproduce this in completely blank projects, and some projects give me the error, some projects do not. I have no idea what is going on or how to reliably reproduce this or diagnose it :(
[18:25:25] boshhead: lethjakman: CSRF token problems? hey me too, even on completely new projects.
[18:30:34] boshhead: lethjakman: what version of rails are you using?
[18:31:06] boshhead: oh thats unfortunate, i was going to try downgrading to 4.0.4 to see if the problem exists there too
[18:31:22] boshhead: no i was using 4.1
[18:32:42] boshhead: lethjakman: I'm totally baffled. On a completley new project, literally just: rails new something; rails generate scaffold....; rake db:migrate; rails server -- sometimes i will get a CSRF token error when doing POSTs on the form the scaffold created..
[18:32:54] boshhead: and as i keep tesitng this, on some projects i create, i dont get that issue
[18:33:00] boshhead: but then when i start changing things i do
[18:33:50] boshhead: browser refreshes? no
[18:35:37] boshhead: shouldnt be
[18:35:44] boshhead: im just accessing localhost
[18:40:54] boshhead: lethjakman: I haven't tried doing anything to fix it yet... because I don't think a blank project should be failing in this way. I'm still on the unproductive frustration and griping phase :P
[18:49:03] boshhead: lethjakman: i found this on google, might be relevant.. reading through it http://www.kalzumeus.com/2011/11/17/i-saw-an-extremely-subtle-bug-today-and-i-just-have-to-tell-someone/
