[02:15:33] idiocrash: howdy doody
[02:16:11] idiocrash: say, is there a way to dynamically load a partial depending on user form selection?

[20:30:47] idiocrash: Hi guys, using AR validations in Rails 4, is there a way to validate the presence of one thing OR another thing?
[20:31:00] idiocrash: basically, if one thing is present, the other doesn't matter
[20:33:54] idiocrash: tubbo: hmm.... custom validations?
[20:40:50] idiocrash: thanks dewdz

[20:40:21] idiocrash: I'm using simple_form. I'd like to break out my f.association checkboxes out by headings. is this possible in simple_form?
[22:46:13] idiocrash: I'm using simple_form. I'd like to break out my f.association checkboxes out by headings. is this possible in simple_form?

[01:34:57] idiocrash: hi, trying to get bootstrap and simple form up and going.
[01:35:29] idiocrash: simpleform has been integrated and generates forms when I run rails g scaffold [my object]
[01:35:40] idiocrash: I also have bootstrap loading in the browser
[01:35:53] idiocrash: however, simple form doesn't seem to be respecting bootstrap
[01:36:01] idiocrash: no bootstrap styles are being applied
[01:36:42] idiocrash: In my simple_form_for, I do have html: { class: 'form-horizontal' }, but doesn't do anything
[01:37:37] idiocrash: I'm trying to get to this: http://simple-form-bootstrap.plataformatec.com.br
[01:38:15] idiocrash: I sure haven't
[01:39:50] idiocrash: https://gist.github.com/jrsims/7f2da029e65bbee48ffb
[01:40:00] idiocrash: that's my simpleform

2014-10-13

[00:03:31] idiocrash: webdestroya: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/bfccb54f4859c539b7e8
[00:05:01] idiocrash: no, event sub type is a drop-down select menu in my 'New' event form
[00:05:21] idiocrash: although i definitely do select an item from the list, the form returns with event_sub_type as 'can't be blank'
[00:05:35] idiocrash: and it sure as hell is not blank
[00:06:46] idiocrash: webdestroya: how
[00:07:39] idiocrash: psh, that is leftover from a previous model
[00:07:45] idiocrash: GOD FUCKEN DAMMIT
[00:07:48] idiocrash: Ok, thats the issue
[00:07:51] idiocrash: thanks a lot dude
[02:02:03] idiocrash: webdestroya:
[02:04:16] idiocrash: webdestroya: hey, so... I'm finally ready to tackle my complex form. I was kinda hoping you could give me some pointers. Still using simple_form and what I have is a one-to-many relationship between Events and Contexts via EventContexts. In my new Event form, I wanted to extend it to show a bunch of checkboxes for all of the possible Contexts. User clicks however many checkboxes and each checked box means a row saved in EventC
[02:04:55] idiocrash: so I put that in my Event model already
[02:05:12] idiocrash: accepts_nested_attributes_for :event_contexts
[02:06:22] idiocrash: I have @contexts = Context.all. For my options
[02:06:48] idiocrash: ok, one thing.. what is the .build method?
[02:09:21] idiocrash: I'm doing this in 'new' in my controller?
[02:11:33] idiocrash: so the list of checkboxes should be from all records currently in Contexts
[02:11:49] idiocrash: I want to display all options
[02:12:04] idiocrash: and then the user can check all the applicable boxes
[02:12:55] idiocrash: when returning to the 'edit' form later, all the checkboxes are shown, but only the saved EventContext records will be checked
[02:13:17] idiocrash: one Event has many EventContexts
[02:14:29] idiocrash: So there are Events. There are Contexts. EventContext is a table with event_id and context_id
[02:16:36] idiocrash: most info is at the Event level
[02:16:48] idiocrash: well, thing is, I want to be able to add options all the time
[02:17:10] idiocrash: so rather than implement attributes at the event level, I figured store it vertically
[02:17:15] idiocrash: via EventContexts
[02:17:58] idiocrash: Event has a label and start/end time
[02:18:13] idiocrash: but, the "scope" of the event is defined via the Contexts it has
[02:18:25] idiocrash: An Event can have one, or many, Contexts
[02:18:50] idiocrash: ....and these are defined by EventContexts
[02:19:12] idiocrash: ...does that make any more sense?
[02:20:20] idiocrash: yes, the has_many through you mentioned is what I have
[02:21:38] idiocrash: that might make more sense
[02:22:32] idiocrash: how would HABTM be implemented?
[02:22:38] idiocrash: same tables?
[02:22:52] idiocrash: different AR associations?
[02:24:20] idiocrash: ok, then how would the form look?
[02:24:26] idiocrash: I am using simple_form
[02:26:50] idiocrash: so here's what I'm kinda stuck on
[02:26:59] idiocrash: listing all possible options as checkboxes
[02:27:14] idiocrash: not just the ones that were checked last time
[03:00:41] idiocrash: sevenseacat: still there? I created a new app to test this in
[03:01:11] idiocrash: sevenseacat: at this time, inside a simple_form_for @event... I have f.association :contexts
[03:01:34] idiocrash: it renders a list box with 3 hexadecimal values for each of the 3 context records I created
[03:02:33] idiocrash: Now I get... No input found for checkboxes
[03:03:52] idiocrash: alright, so now I can check the boxes
[03:05:18] idiocrash: ...but not saving in contexts_events
[03:05:43] idiocrash: perhaps this is due to the issue webdestroya helped me with earlier, with strong_params
[03:05:45] idiocrash: checking...
[03:06:13] idiocrash: ok, so I have to permit on a new model
[03:08:02] idiocrash: params.require(:contexts_events).permit(:event_id,:context_id)
[03:08:08] idiocrash: makes sense?
[03:10:01] idiocrash: ok, so I restarted with strong_params errors on, and I got this: found unpermitted parameters: context_ids
[03:10:20] idiocrash: so I just did this line in event controller: found unpermitted parameters: context_ids
[03:10:23] idiocrash: still no go
[03:11:04] idiocrash: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/d3f9148f97d8dabd139b
[03:11:38] idiocrash: webdestroya: new app completely, just for this test case
[03:16:14] idiocrash: dah, so not sure why this doesn't fix me: params.require(:event).permit(:label, :context_ids)
[03:16:27] idiocrash: error message is: found unpermitted parameters: context_ids
[03:17:14] idiocrash: so I come from Rails 2
[03:18:11] idiocrash: webdestroya: yeah, learning that
[03:18:35] idiocrash: more to think about htough
[03:18:47] idiocrash: but that array fix worked
[03:18:52] idiocrash: I never would have worked out the syntax
[03:19:15] idiocrash: context_ids:[] <-- this is alien to me
[03:19:34] idiocrash: is that a ruby thing that I just never learned?
[03:20:29] idiocrash: well, this solution is working! hooray!
[03:20:47] idiocrash: thanks a lot webdestroya and sevenseacat
[03:47:33] idiocrash: is there a handy way to sort AR collections by a virtual attribute I define inside the model?
[03:47:40] idiocrash: like 'custom_label'

2014-10-12

[23:57:57] idiocrash: so why the hell doesn't Simpleform know that it is passing this
