[20:45:35] perturbation: can someone talk me off the ledge with frozen strings? Making all strings immutable by default seems... bad (worse string concatenation, needing a stringbuilder(?), lots of rewriting needed whenever mutate a string in old code, etc.)
[20:45:50] perturbation: What are the advantages? Less memory usage / thread safety?
[20:50:26] perturbation: lol 0x0dea 'def thaw; Fiddle::Pointer.new(__id__ * 2)[1] &= ~8; end' looks pretty scary to me
[20:50:34] perturbation: looks like programming C in Ruby >.>
[20:54:18] perturbation: hmm... well I know C but I haven't looked at the Fiddle module before... interesting
[21:00:25] perturbation: thanks 0x0dea the diagram really helps explain... needed to look up Fixnum#~ to find out one's complement though heheh
[21:01:53] perturbation: that's evil but kind of awesome

[02:47:29] perturbation: whenever you're using Ruby for standalone scripts, do you end up having to make some variables globals?
[02:48:03] perturbation: I run into issues with that sometimes, and I'm not sure if it's necessary or if I'm just being hackish
[03:00:08] perturbation: thanks weaksauce... it just tends to sneak up on me if I'm writing something short since variables aren't out of scope until I define a method
[03:00:13] perturbation: but then I usually refactor anyways

[12:52:23] perturbation: are you sure you aren't _why in hiding?
[12:54:57] perturbation: uh huh, solid response... Platonic even :)
[13:04:24] perturbation: this is tripping me out way too much on way too little sleep you guys :/

[04:35:51] perturbation: is there anything similar to python's %s string substitution in regex?
[04:36:27] perturbation: (i.e., /%s/ % (foo())? # match on regular expression formed by what foo() returns?)
[04:39:58] perturbation: I'm porting a pygments lexer
[04:40:12] perturbation: everything else was pretty one-to-one
[04:40:46] perturbation: but something like r'(%s)\b' % funcname(keywords) is what I was wondering how to replicate
[04:42:07] perturbation: thanks lbrf, ericwood
[04:42:14] perturbation: I'll give that a shot

[18:04:26] perturbation: hi all! Anyone know what the difference is between a = %w(foo bar baz) and a = *%w(foo bar baz) (if any)?
[18:07:34] perturbation: I'm trying to follow what's going on with someone else's source (which is where I saw that. irb says that a and b are equal after something like 'a = %2(1 2 3); b = *%w(1 2 3)'
[18:08:54] perturbation: jhass: https://github.com/jneen/rouge/blob/master/lib/rouge/lexers/xml.rb#L8
[18:09:50] perturbation: I could have sworn it was... gah. So that's just 'call with this array that can have optional args' then?
[18:10:27] perturbation: typo of '%w' :/
