[00:20:09] renlo: so in IRB, I just did `require_relative 'some_module'` and now I have some 'Foo' thing I have access to. What the heck is 'Foo'?
[00:21:28] renlo: SomeBlah::Blahh::SomeThing.some_method.other_method do\nsome_func "Foo" do .......
[00:22:16] renlo: this language is magical
[00:23:33] renlo: oh I am silly lol, at the bottom of said file is a "Foo = ..." lol
[00:27:26] renlo: proprietary code
[00:28:47] renlo: What I wrote is what I saw, which happened to be incomplete. First time using this language and thought magic was happening
[00:29:07] renlo: so, regardless if I had gisted it or pastebinned it, would have been nonsensical
[00:29:17] renlo: and proprietary :)
[00:30:44] renlo: again, first time using this language and thought magic was happening, the important part was the `some_func "Foo" do`, thought it was somehow injecting that into the global scope or something
[00:33:23] renlo: com-poodr
[00:47:43] renlo: coming from Python I feel like I'm in bizarro land lol
[00:47:48] renlo: "strong parameters" for instance
[00:48:02] renlo: "With strong parameters, Action Controller parameters are forbidden to be used in Active Model mass assignments until they have been permitted"
[00:48:26] renlo: sure, still is odd, Django didnt have weirdness like that I dont think
[00:49:26] renlo: ah got it, makes sense

[03:54:27] renlo: How long would you say it would take someone who is capable in python to get up in running in ruby enough to take on something like rails?
[03:54:55] renlo: ie, if you have a general understanding of how a web application should be made, and how web frameworks generally work, would it be a big undertaking going from python to ruby?
[03:57:21] renlo: would you recommend going from sinatra to rails or straight to rails
[03:57:30] renlo: i've worked with django, flask, sql alchemy, etc
[03:57:34] renlo: tornado, twisted
[04:03:21] renlo: first = arr[0]
[04:03:24] renlo: second = arr[1]
[04:03:30] renlo: though i dont know the rb syntax
[04:03:56] renlo: damn thats cool
[04:17:44] renlo: youd have to account for a) the variables array being shorter b) the values array being shorter c) both being the same length
[04:28:33] renlo: is rvm like virtualenv?
[04:29:11] renlo: or bundler
[04:29:20] renlo: its a way to keep your python installs and packages separate
[04:29:30] renlo: virtualenv some_env
[04:29:38] renlo: makes a directory and a version of python in that directory
[04:29:48] renlo: then you can install packages specifically for that
[04:31:55] renlo: so to go from some repo on github to an installed application, one would use bundler?

[00:41:21] renlo: how does i install ruby
[00:41:44] renlo: tried rvm, but i was getting an error with grunt...i'm just looking to compile some compass / sass stuff
[00:41:52] renlo: ubuntu / debian
[00:42:17] renlo: uhh, i already uninstalled rvm but i think node couldnt find ruby
[00:42:31] renlo: yea, but its going to install an old version of ruby
[00:43:34] renlo: grunt threw a ruby error when i was trying to compile a scss file to css
[00:43:47] renlo: grunt-contrib-compass (/ sass)
[00:44:47] renlo: haha, thanks ben...i feel stupid now
[00:44:52] renlo: looks like ive already have ruby installed
[00:45:41] renlo: is there something similar to idle for ruby?
[00:47:34] renlo: i'm just a bit confused AlexRussia, i think that my version of ruby may be broken
[00:47:41] renlo: when i type 'ruby', nothing happens
[00:47:45] renlo: ruby -v shows the version
[00:55:12] renlo: thanks for the help guys, got it to work :D
[00:56:15] renlo: in python when you type 'python' it opens up the python command line
[00:56:24] renlo: ruby doesnt so i assumed ruby wasnt working / installed
[00:56:46] renlo: AlexRussia no comprende signor
[00:57:02] renlo: haha yea, but i was expecting something like that
[00:57:29] renlo: bnagy thank you!!!
[01:00:57] renlo: as someone who has worked with python / django, what would be the benefits of moving over to rails?
