[06:14:15] dminuoso: I miss Fixnum :(
[06:16:55] michelem: hello folks. I'm a total newbie with Ruby, just adapting a script. Can anybody tell why the comparison at line 12 triggers (a != b) although the print value and type value match?
[06:16:58] michelem: https://gist.github.com/mij/85cb7f682b941c15593e5ddfb796badb#file-gistfile1-txt-L12
[06:17:24] dminuoso: michelem: Yes.
[06:19:10] michelem: would You like to share Thou thoughts too?
[06:19:14] dminuoso: michelem: Sure.
[06:19:26] dminuoso: michelem: This is just a theory however: When you do `puts foo` it basically implies `puts foo.to_s` -> now depending on what the to_s actually does, it's possible that the string representation is the same.
[06:19:38] hxegon: mozzarella: So I tried this out myself, and it seems this is a bug in RedditKit itself... Is there a particular reason you need to use RedditKit, vs something (from a cursory look) more maintained like redd?
[06:19:47] dminuoso: But perhaps the string representation does not cover some hidden state, which the generic identity includes.
[06:20:12] dminuoso: michelem: Does this make any sense to you?
[06:20:12] conta: has joined #ruby
[06:20:52] michelem: does that theory make sense with a Fixnum?
[06:21:02] dminuoso: michelem: Mmm.
[06:22:05] dminuoso: michelem: Can you make a complete testcase out of this?
[06:22:59] dminuoso: michelem: don't use unless and negated comparison, it's unreadable.
[06:23:12] dminuoso: michelem: That line basically is the same as "next if buddyns_ser == dnsme_res"
[06:23:41] dminuoso: Is this possibly tripping you up?
[06:24:39] dminuoso: (Personally I avoid "unless" entirely)
[06:25:11] mozzarella: hxegon: can I connect using only my username and password using redd?
[06:25:25] mozzarella: seems like I need an API access or whatever it's called
[06:25:39] michelem: dminuoso: try to reload the pastebin. That should be full minimal test
[06:26:19] BSAlb: has joined #ruby
[06:26:40] dminuoso: This is interesting.

[06:27:14] dminuoso: or they do.. what.
[06:27:32] nofxxx: dminuoso, I like Integer, says more/no need to explain
[06:28:09] hxegon: mozzarella: You probably won't be able to connect using RedditKit at all considering it hasn't been updated in about 3 years, plus the only supported ruby versions are 1.9 and 2.0, and you are (hopefully) using a current version like 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4

[06:30:21] dminuoso: michelem: There is a subtle mistake in that line.
[06:30:24] dminuoso: It's very very subtle.
[06:30:35] dminuoso: Very subtle.
[06:30:51] dminuoso: Psychologically subtle.
[06:31:22] dminuoso: So subtle, that you will facepalm so hard, it will cause a tornado in the US in the near future.

[06:33:26] michelem: I wouldn't really know. Indentation looks OK, variable names also, putting parentheses doesn't change result
[06:33:34] dminuoso: michelem: Check those 3 again.
[06:33:39] dminuoso: michelem: One of those assumptions is wrong.
[06:33:44] michelem: I have 2' to go (literally), would you please tell me?
[06:33:53] dminuoso: michelem: buddyns_ser is not the same as buddyns_res
