[14:10:01] ilpianista[m]: Hi, I know that I can assign the value of a variable this way `foo=#{bar || 'undefined'}`, but can I also write complex expression to make `foo` equal to `bar` + 'sometext' only when `bar` is defined?
[14:11:31] phaul: foo=#{bar || 'undefined'} is not valid ruby
[14:11:50] phaul: you are doing String interpolation with a string
[14:12:07] ilpianista[m]: yes, you are right

[14:16:13] ilpianista[m]: so I guess my test was failing because of the missing "" :-)
[14:17:00] phaul: well, it deppend what you want. I think that code just dies with NoMethodError
[14:17:28] phaul: &>> nil + 'sometext' || 'some other'
[14:17:29] rubydoc: # => undefined method `+' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) (https://carc.in/#/r/62jd)
[14:17:53] ilpianista[m]: oh right it fails that way in the case bar is `nil`
[14:18:09] ilpianista[m]: but works when `bar` is a string...
[14:18:24] phaul: I would do this: defined?(bar) ? bar + 'sometext' : 'undefined'
[14:18:59] phaul: assuming that that's what you want but I'm not 100% what the inputs are and the desired output would be
[14:19:46] phaul: you can also do bar + 'sometext' rescue 'undefined'

[21:13:46] cthulchu_: ok, ok, I'll make it an obj
[21:14:28] cthulchu_: right, it tried to fetch a string from an array of integers
[21:14:46] cthulchu_: because array's key is an integer, not a string. still, the error was confusing.

[21:23:43] phaul: imajes: btw congrats on the new release. I'm intrigued how ap picked up tracktion. Can I ask you about that?
[21:25:30] phaul: how long did it take from nobody's using AP, to be a widely known gem? Didy you have to do stuff for it, or just being awesome was enough?
[21:25:58] imajes: it's been a gem for 8 years...
[21:26:07] cthulchu_: what does it do?
[21:26:19] cthulchu_: sorry, I'm not familiar

[21:29:22] imajes: thx. i was trying to dig out an example, but my local pg is dead for some reason. lol
[21:30:01] cthulchu_: ah, awesome print
[21:30:11] cthulchu_: heard of it
[21:30:17] cthulchu_: unfortunately, too lae

[21:30:38] cthulchu_: I already have methods that would colorify & prettyprint
[21:30:55] imajes: ditch 'em.
[21:30:57] cthulchu_: still, there was something I lacked a lot
[21:31:44] imajes: but seriously, the new design makes it easier to build even more useful introspections of objects
[21:31:48] imajes: so it can be a bit simpler
[21:35:37] phaul: I think If I did any sort of gem it would just be known by myself, and google search bots. I really don't know how one crosses the line from the plebs to the well known elite.
[21:36:26] imajes: gem push ? :D
[21:37:23] phaul: https://rubygems.org/gems/mealy
[21:37:36] phaul: maybe i solve something that nobody actually wants to solve
[21:38:15] imajes: SMs are a fickle thing
[21:38:35] imajes: first there are a couple well known SM gems
[21:38:40] imajes: so you need to compete w/ that
[21:39:09] imajes: and then you also gotta deal with the fact that most people end up in a world of hurt as their SM gets more complex... and aren't usually minded to go find a better gem to build it , i suspect :D
[21:41:33] uplime: a gem to tell how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop would be useful

[22:15:13] rindolf: is there any way i can improve my rakefile - https://github.com/shlomif/Solitairey/blob/fc-solve--deal-and-sol--preview/Rakefile ? asking again
[22:15:35] rindolf: phaul: i did backups today
[22:15:41] Eiam: imajes: maybe find some more communities to hang out in beyond just #ruby then? =)
[22:16:08] Eiam: you can start a game of #idlerpg or pop over to Rails, Swift... all kinds of stuff if you look
