For some reason Sawyer which is between the two in the depchain is pulled in under ocotokit and faraday is not pulled in so when attempting to require sawyer gets triggered by octokit the entire thing dies w/ a LoadError saying it can't find the file for faraday
[00:25:25] wilywizard: sawyer is also not declared in the Gemfile

[14:37:40] IGnorAND: is there a way to get all set variables?
[14:38:00] IGnorAND: I'm trying to figure out the params I can set in capistrano without going through the whole library
[14:38:29] IGnorAND: something like .methods
[14:38:44] havenwood: IGnorAND: All the instance variables from the instance of a class? Or all the local variables inside a method?
[14:38:49] havenwood: IGnorAND: Say more about the methods you're trying to list?
[14:39:28] havenwood: IGnorAND: I mean variables you're trying to list *
[14:39:37] IGnorAND: @havenwood I figured out I could do a #{fetch(:stage)} to figure out if its production or acceptance or testing
[14:39:46] IGnorAND: I now want the release_name
[14:39:59] havenwood: IGnorAND: So you're trying to get at local variables?
[14:40:08] IGnorAND: havenwood: yeah
[14:40:15] havenwood: &>> local_variables
[14:40:24] rubydoc: stderr: playpen: timeout triggered! (https://carc.in/#/r/72y7)
[14:41:11] IGnorAND: local_variables seems to give me the vars of my capistrano task
[14:41:26] havenwood: IGnorAND: It'll give you the local variables.
[14:41:49] havenwood: IGnorAND: Check?: defined? release_name
[14:41:53] havenwood: IGnorAND: What is it?
[14:43:08] havenwood: local_variables.to_h { |variable| [variable, binding.local_variable_get(variable)] }
[14:43:56] havenwood: &>> meaning = 42; local_variables.to_h { |variable| [variable, binding.local_variable_get(variable)] }
[14:43:57] rubydoc: # => {:meaning=>42} (https://carc.in/#/r/72y8)
[14:45:24] deepredsky: has joined #ruby
[14:48:53] doodlebug: has joined #ruby
[14:48:57] IGnorAND: havenwood: like I said, it seems to give me the values of my lib/capistrano/tasks/custom_tasks.rb and not of the parent object
[14:50:45] havenwood: IGnorAND: It's going to give you the local variables from the current binding.
[14:50:57] havenwood: IGnorAND: If you call it on the thing you want the local variables from, it'll give you them.
[14:51:18] havenwood: IGnorAND: First, check that you're actually trying to get at a local variable?
[14:51:35] havenwood: IGnorAND: defined? release_name
[14:51:52] havenwood: IGnorAND: Is that?: #=> "local-variable"
[14:52:18] havenwood: IGnorAND: (Check by putting a binding.irb there in the code or add a `p release_name` and rerun.
[14:52:27] IGnorAND: havenwood: lemme check with a variable I know
[14:52:40] IGnorAND: It seems to return expression
[14:52:54] IGnorAND: puts defined? :stage
[14:53:27] havenwood: IGnorAND: We know `:stage` is a Symbol.
[14:53:33] havenwood: IGnorAND: What's `release_name`?
[14:53:50] IGnorAND: havenwood: release_name doesnt exist. I am looking for the variable
[14:53:55] havenwood: IGnorAND: defined? release_name
[14:54:02] havenwood: IGnorAND: What's the variable called?
[14:54:20] IGnorAND: fetch(:stage) returns production/testing/acceptance, fetch(:release_name) returns nil
[14:54:36] IGnorAND: havenwood: that's the problem. I dont know. I am trying to look for the variables :)
[14:55:24] havenwood: IGnorAND: #fetch is defined on many classes. Is this a Hash? There are no local variables in your example.
[14:55:44] havenwood: IGnorAND: You're asking about getting at a local variable, but there appear to be no local variables involved.
[14:56:07] havenwood: IGnorAND: Maybe show what you have and what you want, with the code values for both.
[14:56:45] havenwood: IGnorAND: Like, I have `{meaning: 42}` and I want `{42 => :meaning`.
[14:57:10] IGnorAND: havenwood: https://github.com/capistrano/capistrano/blob/220db8fabab15b9d5cd5c9ab1f2744e0aa346eb0/lib/capistrano/setup.rb#L22 This is where I found stage
[14:58:24] havenwood: IGnorAND: I don't have any context here. You've mentioned something about a `release_stage` local variable, and you're showing a rake task. Maybe I just need coffee?
[14:58:45] havenwood: What's the problem you're running into?
[14:59:00] IGnorAND: havenwood: I am trying to make a custom capistrano task.
[14:59:18] havenwood: IGnorAND: Show your code? Where are you stuck?
[14:59:34] IGnorAND: Capistrano does some magic, and I can make a task by adding a file to lib/capistrano/tasks/task_name.rb
[15:00:27] IGnorAND: I want the value of the release_name: https://capistranorb.com/documentation/getting-started/structure/
[15:00:53] zenspider: has joined #ruby
[15:01:32] havenwood: IGnorAND: There's no mention of release name in what you linked? Do you mean the unix timestamp?
[15:05:20] havenwood: IGnorAND: It seems like maybe you're trying to get at a key, not a local variable? I don't use cap, so someone else might be better able to help.
[15:05:27] IGnorAND: havenwood: there is no mention of :stage either. But yes, it is formed by a unix timestamp. https://www.freelancingdigest.com/articles/capistrano-variables/ here you see examples of supposed variables that should exist
[15:08:49] xco: hi i’m reading the ruby style guide. aren’t these two (leading and trailing .) contradicting themselves? https://rubystyle.guide/#leading-dot-in-multi-line-chains
[15:10:46] IGnorAND: xco: they are. you need to chose one
[15:11:01] IGnorAND: xco: A discussion on the merits of both alternative styles can be found here.
[15:11:22] IGnorAND: xco: Adopt a consistent multi-line method chaining style. There are two popular styles in the Ruby community, both of which are considered good - leading . and trailing
[15:11:31] havenwood: xco: On Ruby trunk there's a new option: |>
[15:11:52] xco: havenwood: got a link to that please?

[15:12:57] doodlebug: has joined #ruby
[15:12:58] xco: IGnorAND: it’s confusing they included it at all then. the guide should have one style, if it’s giving different styles then it makes no sense in my opinion because every style they posted has ANOTHER style yet they chose the style they chose
[15:13:04] xco: havenwood: thanks
[15:13:18] xco: havenwood: oh that’s in the new upcoming ruby version! nice

[15:14:03] IGnorAND: xco: they state "adopt one, and stick with it" and then continue to explain both.
[15:14:05] havenwood: xco: Just run `rubocop` for one opinion.
[15:14:29] IGnorAND: xco: and make a .rubocop.yml to change the opinion :P
[15:14:47] havenwood: I mean clearly RuboCop is nuts with the spaces inside Hashes, but it's consistently that variant of nuts. :P
[15:14:56] xco: havenwood: right. i’ve used Rubocop so much so that naturally i write Ruby code that’s consistent with Rubocop itself :D
[15:15:04] xco: IGnorAND: i agree
[15:15:15] IGnorAND: xco: with what do you agree?
[15:15:29] xco: IGnorAND: to this “and make a .rubocop.yml to change the opinion :P”
[15:15:56] xco: like picking one style and enforcing it with Rubcop for consistency across board
[15:15:57] IGnorAND: xco: everyone makes their own style guide. This guide is to help you create one
[15:18:03] xco: havenwood: i kind of like the |> what do you make of it?
[15:18:55] havenwood: xco: If I wasn't a huge fan of the F#/Elixir pipe operation meaning, I'd not have any reservations.
[15:18:58] doodlebug: has joined #ruby
[15:19:30] havenwood: xco: I like the syntax addition, but I'd really like to have the functional meaning of |> rather than the syntactic sugar for straightforward method chaining
[15:20:03] havenwood: Matz suggested possibly changing it from |> to >>>, so there's not confusion with the functional |>.
[15:20:16] havenwood: I kinda consider it a <|, personally.
[15:20:28] havenwood: I was thinking of proposing that.
[15:20:44] xco: “I kinda consider it a <|, personally.” it looks like that to me because i think in Elixir it’s the opposite of what it is in Ruby 2.7
[15:20:47] havenwood: (1..).each == 1.. <| each
[15:21:18] havenwood: IMHO: Integer(42, exception: false) == 42 |> Integer(exception: false)
[15:21:30] havenwood: There are reasons that's hard to implement in Ruby.
[15:23:52] xco: “42 |> Integer(exception: false)” this looks weird though, to me. looks like you’d be doing 42.Integer(exception: false) right?
[15:23:56] xco: havenwood: ^
[15:24:16] xco: and not Integer(42, exception: false)
[15:24:21] havenwood: xco: In Elxiir/F#/OCaml style that'd mean: Integer(42, exception: false)
[15:24:37] xco: ah ok i was thinking about Ruby 2.7
[15:24:45] havenwood: 42 |> Integer(exception: false) |> Math.sqrt
[15:24:59] doodlebug: has joined #ruby
[15:25:15] xco: i hated OCaml in school for it’s syntax and now there’s a reference to it again :P

[15:30:21] havenwood: I proposed <| on the bugtracker.
[15:30:45] havenwood: It lets us hold out hope for a functional |> in Ruby.
[15:30:45] xco: yeah i was about to ask if you alread made a proposal :D
[15:30:59] doodlebug: has joined #ruby
[15:31:11] havenwood: https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/15799
[15:33:30] xco: that’s a strong and fair argument
[15:35:56] xco: also i think ruby has started to get a few ideas from the functional style; one recent one is this pattern matching which i understand is experimental…so going for |> shouldn’t come as a surprise i guess
[15:36:23] havenwood: xco: Matz has been enjoying Elixir.
[15:37:01] xco: it’s clearly evident, but that’s fine because Elixir itself has been heavily influenced by Ruby
